Glimpses of Japan

Tuesday, March 06, 2018. The HS Entrance Exam: Today is the first day of the rest of your life. It comes down to today and tomorrow, March 7-8 this year in Niigata, the culmination of 9 yrs. of compulsory education, the last 3 of which were primarily a preparation for the high school entrance exam and additional years of "elective" schooling. I'd venture to say every jr high 3rd-year who sat the exam has an insurance policy, a Plan B, or what is referred to as a suberiko. 65288;滑り校), or suberitomeko.

Glimpses of Japan: Summer Cycling: Castle to Castle

http://japanglimpsed.blogspot.com/2015/06/summer-cycling-castle-to-castle.html

Tuesday, June 02, 2015. Summer Cycling: Castle to Castle. This summer (August 1-2) several cycling mates and I will be riding from the castle town of Tsuruoka, Yamagata, to Aizu Wakamatsu, Fukushima, itself a castle town (hence the ride's moniker). Should you be interested in joining us for this event, Japan's first ever brevet not geared toward road cyclists, please see here. Labels: cycling in Japan. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Tuesday, June 02, 2015. I know what it is, but what's it called? This is a meteorological data collection station, and you may have come across a few in your day in Japan. Rendered in English, it's the "100 Leaf Box", or 百葉箱 (hyakuyoubako) in Japanese. Lyrical name for a box containing remote weather monitoring apparatus. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Glimpses of Japan: Ippudo: Authentic Hakata Ramen in Niigata

Tuesday, November 18, 2014. Ippudo: Authentic Hakata Ramen in Niigata. I have it on the authority of a Kyushu native that the only authentic Hakata-style ramen in Niigata is to be found at Ippudo (一風堂). It certainly was tasty. Hakata ramen originated in Fukuoka City in either 1941 or '42 at the open-air stall 三馬路 (Mimaji? Operated by one Morii Kentaro. The ramen is characterised by a pork-based soup and thin, straight noodles. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). The Grateful Wolf: A Japanese Folktale.

Monday, November 5, 2007. Suibara and the Yamabiko Road: Part I. The road climbs to a modest elevation and offers panoramic views of Niigata City, 40k distant. The photo at bottom shows the restaurant in Murasugi where I ate lunch. Opened in October, the establishment serves Japanese dishes made with ingredients produced nearby, including rice, vegetables, and the tofu for which Murasugi is known. Though not especially fond of the sweet bean paste known as. A decoction made from. Dissolved in hot water.

Japan by Bike: How Much Farther?

http://cyclejapan.blogspot.com/2007/11/how-much-farther.html

Monday, November 5, 2007. This climb didn't show on our map. When our computers had clocked kilometer 115 of the 125 we expected to ride that day, the road began its unmistakable, final descent into Nishi-Aizu. We reached the station at 3:30, over 8 hours after leaving Tsugawa. Don's face is expressive of the fatigue and relief we both felt upon finishing-for the first and possibly last time- the Honna-Tsugawa Forest Road ride. Brian Southwick and Don Speden. Japan by Bike: The Honna-Tsugawa Forest Road: to the Summit

http://cyclejapan.blogspot.com/2007/11/honna-tsugawa-forest-road-to-summit.html

Saturday, November 3, 2007. The Honna-Tsugawa Forest Road: to the Summit. To gather chestnuts and mushrooms. Eventually we came upon a trickle of water dripping over a rock face, and we stopped to rest and refill our long-empty bottles. The final 3k to the summit was gravel, and the road deeply pitted and uneven. Finally, after 3 solid hours of climbing, we reached the 1,130 meter "Salt Storehouse" Pass. It was 12:30.
