土佐国井ノ口村 現 高知県安芸市 の地下浪人の家に生まれ、たぐいまれな商才と行動力を発揮して海運事業をおこし、三菱財閥を創業した岩崎弥太郎の生家跡。 藩への抗議 門柱への落書き をとがめられ弥太郎自身も投獄されてしまうが、獄中で商人から商売 算術の法を学び、商業の道に目覚めた。 商会に改称、これを母体にして、明治6年 1873年 に弥太郎の個人企業 三菱商会 が設立された。

いろは丸展示館 には、坂本龍馬率いる海援隊が乗っていた蒸気帆船 いろは丸 から引き揚げられた船体部品や、いろは丸の沈没状況を再現したジオラマ、談判期間中に龍馬が寝泊まりした屋根裏部屋の再現コーナーなどがある。 伊予国大洲藩の所有で、龍馬率いる海援隊が借り受けていた いろは丸 160トン が、慶応3年 1867年 4月23日、長崎から大坂への航行中、瀬戸内海笠岡諸島で紀州藩の 明光丸 887トン と衝突。 龍馬は、この事件の７カ月後 慶応3年 1867年)11月15日 に京都 近江屋で中岡慎太郎と共に何者かに襲撃され命を落とした。
