Think Globally, Eat Locally. Archive for August, 2011. What’s All the Buzz About? On August 30, 2011 Leave a Comment. There’s been a lot of buzz around Helios Farm lately. Think Globally, Eat Locally. Helios Farm is growing and multiplying. The Year in Review: It Takes A Village To Start A Farm. October 26, 2011 by Helios Farm. It’s hard to believe, but our first growing season is coming to an end. We went to our last farmer’s market on Thanksgiving weekend, and harvested our last CSA boxes last week. Now that the harvest is done, we’re cleaning up the garden for winter and reflecting on our adventure so far. When life gives you giant 12-pound sweetmeat squash. Tara brings...

Think Globally, Eat Locally. Laquo; What’s All the Buzz About? Preserving Farm Food: Yes we Can! September 13, 2011 by Helios Farm. One of the nice things about farming is tuning in to the cycle of the seasons. Being outdoors all the time, observing farm crops and other plants on a daily basis, and paying attention to the weather have connected me to the flow of one season to the next. A sign of late summer: a stray watermelon masquerading as a tomato. Fireworks in the garden: A leek flower goes to seed.

Think Globally, Eat Locally. Archive for May, 2011. On May 19, 2011 Leave a Comment. Some farmers have a greenhouse where they start their seedlings in the spring. We have a living room. You know, different strokes for different folks…. Who needs a sofa anyways? Every Green House needs a Red Lobster. Even in the controlled environment of the greenhouse, we have to contend with wildlife. Our cats have been eyeing the tender shoots for weeks, and I recently caught one chowing down in the onion patch. When ...

Think Globally, Eat Locally. Archive for June, 2011. Our First Farmers Market. On June 27, 2011 1 Comment. Tara, Leela, Brad and Kelly at our market stand. This week we went to our first farmers market in Ottawa’s Little Italy. Harvesting, packing and going to market was quite the adventure. A washing station with a view. We didn’t have a salad spinner big enough to dry out all these greens (although we read that some farms use an old washing machine on the spin cycle to do this, so stay tuned). Bright a...
