Beit Emmett: Pilgrimage to Manchester
http://beitemmett.blogspot.com/2015/05/pilgrimage-to-manchester.html
The adventures of the Emmett Family. Monday, May 4, 2015. Marie’s exposure came earlier. She remembers the soccer stadium near their home in Tangier and then watching 1970 world cup games on the television while living in Venezuela. Our exposure to soccer increased dramatically with the introduction of AYSO to the USA in the 1980s and through which many of our nieces and nephews were introduced to the game. Two of those nephews grew up to play soccer at the college level. Some say Will looks like MU star...

The adventures of the Emmett Family. Sunday, January 3, 2010. Sunday morning we walked across Hyde Park to 9:00 services at the Hyde Park Ward. After the full three hour block we then spent the afternoon exploring the nearby Natural History and Science Museums. The Natural History Museum is housed in a beautiful building. We were tempted to ice skate but didn't. Great stone work and interesting gargoyles. In the middle of the public square was an interesting nativity. I liked the reclining Joseph. Wednes...

The adventures of the Emmett Family. Saturday, May 2, 2015. Sailing up the winding Saigon River I pulled out my map of the Mekong Delta to show some of the kids where we were going. It was a windy day. Thanks to life long learner Kristin Rush (traveling with her husband and two children) for these two photos of a fun moment. Spring 2015 Faculty. A wonderful, diverse group of talented people. Thanks to ship photographer Evan Meyer for all of the group photos. Last gathering of the Mormons. We arrived in E...

Beit Emmett: November 2014
http://beitemmett.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
The adventures of the Emmett Family. Wednesday, November 19, 2014. The Worth of Walls. Walls have always been the standard fare for protection along the narrow land bridge called Canaan/Palestine/Israel. Often they kept invaders at bay. At other times walls were of little worth. King David's men were able to circumvent the walls of the Jebusite city and conquer Jerusalem by climbing up through the water access tunnels into the city. Israel-Jordan border along the Yarmuk River 2010. That border fence in m...

The adventures of the Emmett Family. Wednesday, March 25, 2015. That day in the middle of the Indian Ocean when the captain fired up both engines to show us that our normal cruising speed of 13-14 knots was not as fast as a full throttle 27 knots. It was a nice recess from morning study hall. There be pirates in the Indian Ocean. Our ship can out run them, but just in case, hoses were ready to blast them away. This is the fifth deck where I like to jump rope and walk for my evening exercise. For Mauritiu...

The adventures of the Emmett Family. Wednesday, April 29, 2015. Morocco, part 2. Allah- God, al-watan- country, al-Melek- King on a reservoir. Morocco has interesting speed limit postings. The signs can go from 100 km/hour to 80 and then to 60 within a few score of meters. Many of these quick slow downs are for the frequent roundabouts. Added to the mix are slow moving trucks, winding roads and ups and downs. All of which made it very hard to even try to stick to the posted speed. Morocco, part 2. Two we...

The adventures of the Emmett Family. Saturday, January 31, 2015. We rode the train up to Kyoto on Thursday morning. Once there we caught a bus out to the northwest neighborhood of Arashiyama. After a simple lunch of fried rice or rice and curry, we visited a macaque monkey (the only monkeys found in Japan) reserve. It was a fun hike up the mountain. Monkeys roamed wild and then at the top humans could feed them healthy snacks from within an enclosure. Kyoto from the north-western hills. Delightfully smel...

Beit Emmett: Ireland

The adventures of the Emmett Family. Sunday, May 10, 2015. Catholic Belfast. Sinn Fein- the one time political arm of the IRA (Irish Republican Party) now participates legally in the political process. North Ireland Catholics sympathize with many other disenfranchised minority groups and individuals. Bobby Sands who died from his hunger strike. A lark breaking the chains of political oppression. The ruling English named city streets after colonial holdings around the world- salt on the wound. The Protest...
