Sunday, December 18, 2011. Getting Player Feedback: Reactions vs Comments. As a game designer, I always keep in mind that I create games not for myself, but for others. What I enjoy most is the process. Itself, the development. But the end product? That's for everyone else! Want, well not directly, anyway. There are a couple different ways that I have participated in which to receive and process this information:. Having a player play the game while the designer (and other developers) observe. In my ...

Monday, August 12, 2013. Annual Gaming Habits and Non-Nostalgia. So, the question is: is this a form of non-nostalgia? It's not nostalgia if I am, in fact, not simply remembering. A game that I used to enjoy playing, but am actively doing so, frequently? Nostalgia is about someone having a fond memory of an event and a longing to experience again. So, if one continues with an activity, on a regular basis, they cannot feel nostalgic towards it, right? I'm really looking forward to it! 5 Super Mario Bros 3...

Wednesday, August 15, 2012. Top 5 Commodore 64 Games. 30 years ago this month was the release of the Commodore 64. Home computer. The C=64, along with the Atari 2600, is where I got my start in gaming. What was special about the Commodore 64, though, is that it was not just what I started gaming on, but it is also what I started designing. On As young as 5 years old, I was building levels and designing games on a C=64. Falcon Patrol 2 is a very good C=64 game. It's not one the best. Platformers. I fi...

Tuesday, January 31, 2012. I (heart) Great Design: Morality in games. I just recently acquired the Platinum Trophy in Dark Souls, and I’ve been looking back on the experience quite fondly. It was a great 130 hours; about 20 hours longer than it took to get the Platinum Trophy in Skyrim. It was a long and challenging road and one of the best gaming journeys I’ve been on in a while. Pictured Above (from right to left): an honorable knight(on stairs), and an asshole. Because I started playing the game immed...

Monday, May 28, 2012. Two weeks ago was the Toronto Game Jam: TOJam 2012. If you've been reading my blog, you probably know all about it. If not, then check out the TOJam. Site for all you need to know about it. TOJam was a great skill development opportunity and really brings developers back to a grass-roots, guerrilla-style development cycle. It was exhausting, challenging, and ultimately, very fulfilling. The weekend was full of ups and downs, and was a great learning experience. 1 Focused team of pros.

Rantings of a Left-handed Game Developer. Sunday, February 27, 2011. Adventures In Minecraft - Part I: I Play So You Don't Have To! Rantings of a Left-handed Game Developer. Tuesday, September 28, 2010. Is it just me, or does everyone feel like a portion of their identity expires every once in a while, and needs to be refreshed? Revisiting my old blog, I couldn't help but notice how much I just wanted to delete it and just start from scratch, so I did! Why did I do this, you ask? Hi diddly ho, my fellow left-erino! I am here - http:/ twitter.com/QKmbrGames. Are The "Evil" Corporations Responsible? So here's my question. Who is ultimately responsible for this unfortunate trend? Rantings of a Left-handed Game Developer. Thursday, January 20, 2011. The Evolution of Impulse Gaming - What Changed and What Stayed the Same. It was the early 90's. The Internet as it is today was still a very young idea. Cars would drive by with windows down, blasting Ace of Base for everyone to hear. Kids would spend most of their summers outdoors. The air was dewy sweet. I remember it like it was yesterday. This was a defining moment of my youth. Angry Birds. So much fun for so little $ $. Similarly,...

Learning and Skills Development for HE and Work. Thursday, 10 December 2009. Meeting With My Tutor. Wednesday, January 1, 2014. Top 10 Games of 2013. 2013 is now over, and in terms of games, it was arguably one of the best years ever! Picking 10 games to highlight as the best was not an easy chore. In fact, it was excruciatingly difficult. There were plenty of surprises, for sure. Ultimately, I chose these ten games based entirely on how much pure enjoyment. Came out of nowhere and blew me away. One of the biggest surprise hits of the year, SteamWorld Dig. You can even get it on Steam. Is based on such...
