Optimistic locking in Grails is handled by Hibernate, whereby Hibernate stores the version number in a special version column in the database. This version value is not available by default as part of JSON object when you convert the domain instance to JSON. In an AJAX driven application, when you are rendering the whole domain object as JSON object, having version also part of it makes sense to handle optimistic locking.
