Western drought market solutions - Jay Evensen
http://www.jayevensen.com/opinions/cope-with-the-wests-drought-using-market-solutions
Cope with the West's drought using market solutions. Take a quick look out the window. Is it raining? Nothing snaps our attention to all those dire predictions about a long-term drought in the West quite like a winter without snow, followed by an early spring without rain. Well, there was that nice little snowstorm on Christmas. It’s as if the heavens listened to Utahns who are fond of saying, “I hate. Which means that, unless things change in a hurry, we’re going to have to take some drastic action.
Jay Evensen - Opinions
http://www.jayevensen.com/opinions.html
Quakes in Italy, Myanmar should be a wakeup call. Few things scare me more than the thought of being trapped beneath the rubble of my own house after an earthquake strikes at 3:36 am. Teacher's letter to parents is like 'rocket surgery'. Back-to-school night with my 14-year-old this week reminded me that the beginning of a marathon is always more pleasant than the 15th mile, when you’re struggling up a hill, trying to keep focused on a distant goal. In a meeting last Friday between the combined KSL-Deser...

Too many news laws and too little rain - Jay Evensen
http://www.jayevensen.com/opinions/how-many-new-laws-do-we-really-need
How many new laws do we really need? With spring busting out all over in Utah, this seems as good a time as any to lie in the grass a contemplate the shapes of clouds. Here are a few things to ponder:. Bull;Be honest, how many of you looked around at the beginning of the year and said, “I think we need 528 new laws in this state”? I doubt many of us can think of 528 of anything the world needs, let alone the state of Utah, and yet here we are with 528 new rules and new ways to get into trouble. Bull;If w...

Past columns organized by subject. This page is for people who want to research my writing on a particular subject. It's not all-inclusive. I've just assembled some topics of general interest. I've topped the list with a link to the column that was quoted verbatim by then-LDS Church President Gordon B. Hinckley in the October 2005 General Conference. I get a lot of requests for copies of that one, so now you can quit calling. If you would rather look up what I've written according to publication date,.

Tante Marianne's Life, The Universe and Everything: Spreading the Gospel in Texas
http://tantemari.blogspot.com/2015/08/spreading-gospel-in-texas.html
Tuesday, August 11, 2015. Spreading the Gospel in Texas. My Nephew Anders (far right) together with their latest convert ready for baptism. My nephew, Elder Anders, who is currently serving as an LDS missionary in the wilds of Texas, wrote a very happy, bouncy, and cheery letter home this week. He was happy because they had a lovely investigator who was baptized on Saturday, and confirmed a member of the church on Sunday. I do miss family. Gatherings. Families are central to God's plan. That's one. Howev...
Tante Marianne's Life, The Universe and Everything: August 2015
http://tantemari.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html
Tuesday, August 25, 2015. At the Hogle Zoo. I see from the above photo that the King of the Jungle is enjoying his summer! My friend Meldee attended the Hogle Zoo recently and took these great photos. I love cats. Little ones. Big ones. It doesn't matter. However, the big ones are harder to pet and cuddle with impunity. This Lion Father looks rather tranquil and happy. I think the Lion Father is happy because he has a cute wife. She likes just hanging out in the summer, too. The Circle of Liiiiiiiife.
Tante Marianne's Life, The Universe and Everything: Leaving Ottawa
http://tantemari.blogspot.com/2015/08/leaving-ottawa.html
Tuesday, August 4, 2015. This is my nephew Daniel. My nephew and his family are saying good-bye to Canada this week. They'll soon be winging their way to Utah for a much-needed home leave in the bosom of their family! They recently caught an Ottawa Senators hockey game, where these photos were taken, because you need to see a hockey game before you leave Canada. It's the law. Livia is distracted as her mom tries to get her to pose for a photo. I have to admit I'm very excited about seeing them again!
Tante Marianne's Life, The Universe and Everything: March 2015
http://tantemari.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Tuesday, March 31, 2015. Crazy Sock Hop Workday. Socks that look like tennies. The last Friday of March (the 27th) we had crazy sock day at work. Ivy dropped by my office to model her socks. It's strange how this activity did not seem to appeal to the men in our firm. Only one, Dodds, participated. However, he represented the other menfolk well, his socks were pretty funny! Dodds had black-toed socks. The women, on the other hand, participated with gusto! Sabrina's pink socks had cute pom-poms on the back.
Tante Marianne's Life, The Universe and Everything: January 2015
http://tantemari.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
Friday, January 30, 2015. Jack in the Box. Checking boxes is hard work. Hi, my name is Jack. I live with my human mom. It's just the two of us, and let me tell you, I have an active lifestyle taking care of my human! First, I have to inspect all the boxes that come into our house. Inspecting the afghan on my chair. okay, I know it looks like I'm sleeping. Second, I'm keeping a good watch on, well, everything. You never know what kind of stuff might be lurking in mom's tote bags! Posted by Auntie Em.
Tante Marianne's Life, The Universe and Everything: November 2014
http://tantemari.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Wednesday, November 26, 2014. You can just make out the musician behind the bar. In this photo of the Swiss Restaurant interior. I have a dear friend who, every now and then, drags me along on culinary adventures. So, I shouldn't have been surprised on Friday night to be whisked off to Valley Glen to the Swiss Chef Restaurant. Valley Glen is an area close to Van Nuys, and, believe me, an unlikely place for a good restaurant. This time was something even more fun! These statues greet visitors in the foyer.
Tante Marianne's Life, The Universe and Everything: April 2015
http://tantemari.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Thursday, April 30, 2015. Let There Be Music! My grand-niece Livia and her Daddy. This week has been a bit trying, so I'm posting a little musical interlude while I catch up on things. Insert a happy little tune here . Hope you're having a good one! Posted by Auntie Em. Links to this post. Tuesday, April 28, 2015. Sisters Veronica and Barbara waiting in the lobby. Our company President, Jimmy. That was a lot of fun! Our CFO, Juan. Sabrina with her lunch. There were seven of us who went. We even got pie.
Tante Marianne's Life, The Universe and Everything: February 2015
http://tantemari.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
Friday, February 27, 2015. Rick Springfield's Working Class Dog Tour Tee, 1981. Today is Wear Your Favorite Rock Band Tee Shirt day here at the office. Later, we'll have cake for all the February birthdays. Wearing funny theme shirts and celebrating birthdays are nice ways to end each month. I began reflecting on some of the artists I've seen in concert through the years:. Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. That's an eclectic list, isn't it? Who have you seen in concert? Who do you wish you could have seen?
Tante Marianne's Life, The Universe and Everything: The Gum Wall
http://tantemari.blogspot.com/2015/08/the-gum-wall.html
Monday, August 10, 2015. My nephew Nils and Rachel at the Gum Wall. My thoughts exactly, Rachel! Nothing is more American than chewing gum. That should make the Market Theatre Gum Wall, a local landmark in Downtown Seattle, one of the most iconic sites in America. This is a brick alleyway covered in (gross! Used chewing gum. The gum encrusted wall is about 50 feet long, 15 feet high and several inches thick. Kirsti and Jay at the Gum Wall. Posted by Auntie Em. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Confessi...
