The Enthusiast: thinking about things: November 2011
http://jayveeaitch.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html
The Enthusiast: thinking about things. Musings, ponderings, noticings, appreciatings. Sunday, November 6, 2011. Thoughts on Cubist collage. Working on the first term paper at the Courtauld, on Cubist collage and the use of newspaper, and thinking a lot about Picasso's beautiful, spare, three-material collages from November–December 1912. I love all of those early collage pieces, but I just got the MoMA catalog for the show Picasso's Guitars: 1912-14. Pablo Picasso, Bottle and wine glass on a table.

The Enthusiast: thinking about things. Musings, ponderings, noticings, appreciatings. Wednesday, January 18, 2012. Art in Print (Issue 5) Review: Richard Deacon at Paragon Press. The plates have been subtly rotated and layered, forcing depth in the diamond-shapes where color overlaps—the metallic ink forces you to move around the prints, to look from many angles, to consider them spatially, and it is this bodily effect that returns Deacon’s line to sculpture. Vol 1, no. 5. Labels: Art in Print.

I recently posted on Printeresting about my time in the Ox-Bow print shop, and there are lots more photos from Ox-Bow on Flickr here. I thought I'd share some of the process behind making the lithograph that was printed as the cover of Grow No Moss. Original lithograph in black ink on Kitakata paper that serves as the cover artwork for the book. This i...

Small Town, Great Life: Valentine's Day
http://smalltowngreatlife.blogspot.com/2015/02/valentines-day.html
Small Town, Great Life. Saturday, February 14, 2015. So clearly, a larger-than-life personality and a fabulous name were at the top of my list in those days. A girl has to have priorities. 8221; I answered pretty suavely back, “Fine! 8221; because I didn’t want to hurt his feelings, never mind that it felt like someone had taped a ham sandwich to the top of my shirt. For half a year, I dated a lovely local man I’d been in kindergarten with, but mostly I dated men I’d met online. I got up and left and lef...

Small Town, Great Life: The three lessons
http://smalltowngreatlife.blogspot.com/2012/12/the-three-lessons.html
Small Town, Great Life. Tuesday, December 18, 2012. You have been given questions to which you cannot be given answers. You will have to live them out—perhaps a little at a time . . . It may take as long as you live, perhaps. [And] I will tell you a further mystery: It may take longer. Below are what I now regard as the three most important lessons of my adulthood:. Pay very close attention to a lesson the first time it presents itself. There is no going back. The first lesson applies to gun violence.

Small Town, Great Life: Our Matt
http://smalltowngreatlife.blogspot.com/2014/01/our-matt.html
Small Town, Great Life. Sunday, January 19, 2014. Matt died a couple of days ago and broke all our hearts. Matt and my dear high school pal Gary had been partners for fifteen years, and they were both family to me. It's gratifying to realize that all my memories of Matt are funny. I remember best his laugh: the guy had an enormous, bellowing laugh that filled the room and was often coupled with him doubling over or literally slapping his own knee. What a demonstrable love of life! Lie to a priest! The bo...

Small Town, Great Life. Monday, July 1, 2013. I got married in May . . . six weeks ago now, and feels simultaneously like years ago and moments ago. Like every couple, we had a few bumps on the road to our wedding day, and I shall share some of them here for your amusement. People can twist anything to become a good-luck totem. At a wedding ("No, it's lucky. If it rains on your wedding day! You found a spider in your bridal gown! Big space for the date here]. But instead of filling in some comforting...

Small Town, Great Life: December 2014
http://smalltowngreatlife.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Small Town, Great Life. Wednesday, December 24, 2014. The view from this Christmas Eve. Christmas is about to tiptoe into my house, and yours, and just like in How the Grinch Stole Christmas. It will not be about ribbons and boxes and tringlers and fuzzles or even dafflers and wuzzles. Instead, my goal for the last couple of years has been all about a good Christmas mood. That's when I remember, oh, yeah. I could, instead of irking those I love and live with, just do less. Catherine S. Vodrey. Subscribe ...

Small Town, Great Life: August 2011
http://smalltowngreatlife.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html
Small Town, Great Life. Sunday, August 21, 2011. The drive to Nags Head. For many years, making the drive to Nags Head has been a given each summer. It’s anywhere from ten and a half to twelve hours, which depends on how many stops you make, which depends at least some on how many peanut-sized bladders there are in the car. Yes, we took our dog to the beach most years. Every now and again, my mother will say to me with some puzzlement, “Why did we do that? Why did we take the dog to the beach? My pal Pai...

Sunday, April 25, 2010. Book Review: "In the Graveyard of Empires". In the Graveyard of Empires". Seth G. Jones. WW Norton and Company,. 2010, 2009 by Seth G. Jones. I have been seriously entertaining thoughts of joining the United States Army and felt it would be entirely unwise to do so without at least a basic understanding of one of our major combat zones. Seth G. Jones certainly does not disappoint with this empirical study of what must be one of the most diverse regions on Earth. Pakistan, our ally...
