Tangent Space: April 2006
http://tangentspace.blogspot.com/2006_04_01_archive.html
Monday, April 17, 2006. Among the coolest articles I read was of a BEC in a 1D trap that never achieves thermal equilibrium. Due to fundamental integrabilities in the system. KAM theorem in action. (And yes I did read the paper, not just the physics web press release). Posted by Jack Challis at 2:19 PM. Saturday, April 15, 2006. So at long last, my lab work which was required to finish my coursework has ended and I should finish up the reports in the next week and a half. That allows me to look forwa...

Tangent Space: State of resolutions and such
http://tangentspace.blogspot.com/2006/08/state-of-resolutions-and-such.html
Wednesday, August 30, 2006. State of resolutions and such. I haven't heard from many people saying they missed my blog during its long summer recess, so I felt little need to keep it current. I thought it might be nice to say something. In January I made a variety of New Year's resolutions - here is the current state of affairs:. 1) Keep weight below 190 lbs, preferably below 185. A rousing success - a healthful diet and walking 2-3 miles daily has kept me at my goal (the scale read 182 lbs this morning).

Tangent Space: March 2006
http://tangentspace.blogspot.com/2006_03_01_archive.html
Wednesday, March 22, 2006. Advisor and pictures fun. The question I received most at the March Meeting was embarrassingly difficult to answer:. So who are you working for? The easy answer is I don't know, but I plan to find out within the next month. There are two people here whose work I like, who I think would give me the proper amount of direction, and would help me not only do good research but also complete it in the next three years. Tangent Space: May 2006

Thursday, May 18, 2006. A month since I last posted - I guess it is better to be working than blogging about working. Perhaps I can give a brief discussion of my last month. I completed the coursework for my Master's Thesis by turning in a lab report on measuring the superconducting gap in Pb. I don't know why but I just couldn't find the energy to do the lab report. It's over now. And understand a good deal more of it. After reading the paper it made the 1972 Nobel lectures. That much more exciting.

Tangent Space: January 2006

Monday, January 30, 2006. So I have spent the past weekend preparing my computer for its grand migration. I backed up my hard drive, put Fedora and Knoppix Live on CD, and then spent much of last night partitioning my hard drive in preparation for the grand install. It worked, and I was able to set up a dual boot system, but I was ultimately unhappy with the partitioning. Posted by Jack Challis at 5:21 PM. Thursday, January 26, 2006. Google recovers skeletons from my closet III. To hold a record back home.

Tangent Space: November 2005
http://tangentspace.blogspot.com/2005_11_01_archive.html
Tuesday, November 29, 2005. Since this is the last week Yale professors can assign homework, I'm drowning in it. A cross section of problems:. 1) Contrast competitive enzyme inhibition with non-competitive enzyme inhibition. 2) Calculate the proper velocity of a beacon falling into a Schwarzschild black hole (invariant under rotations, time translations, and time reversal). And of course, March Meeting abstracts are due tomorrow. Posted by Jack Challis at 8:56 PM. Saturday, November 26, 2005. Looking for ...

Vacation entry 3 - Wedding. Posted by Jack Challis at 10:02 PM. Vacation Entry 2 - Family. Over Christmas I went to see my Uncle Bob with my parents. He and his wife used to throw big family get togethers, but after his wife died they fizzled and he would have spent much of the day alone if we hadn't come up...

Friday, February 03, 2006. A c ontroversial statement to drive responses. I refuse to add a counter to this website, so I have no idea how many people outside of my office read this e-mail. But to get some responses going, I'd like to post a controversial statement. Feel free to respond, just keep it above the belt. I think that living off campus, particularly in East Rock, makes a physics grad student more productive compared with those who live in HGS. What do you think? I'd like to know. So several la...
