My quest for Chess understanding. get ready for a long, bumpy and (quite likely) never-ending ride! Saturday, July 23, 2005. King's Gambit riddle. SOLVED! As I have lamented several times in this web log, I struggle against the King's Gambit. I lose about 80% of the time with the black pieces. I often wondered why this was so. Was I getting psyched out by the dastardly 2. f4? Was it just a superior opening? The answer to both question now is clearly no. Posted by BlueEyedRook @ 1:02 AM. But just watching...

My quest for Chess understanding. get ready for a long, bumpy and (quite likely) never-ending ride! Wednesday, November 30, 2005. Life's Ups and Downs. When it rains it pours . . . . but when the sun shines, it shines bright. My personal life has been a real wreck lately. Lots of crazy stuff going on and almost all of it deals with work. That, however, is for another web blog! One that absolutely no one would want to read (who wants to hear about some person griping . . . about non-chess. The problem to ...

And actually goes through with it. This is a horrible mistake. Do you see why? It leads to any easy mate-in-four (and that's only if black's wants to prolong the inevitable! Forced). 3. Bc2. Ughhh I made a typical "goof" last week. After battling for days (. Ahhh, the joys of correspondence chess! For a mere one-pawn advantage, I then throw the entire game away in the following position ( see left. I was (of course! Focused on the g4 bishop looming over my e2 rook. I. I played the pathetic 30. My quest for Chess understanding. get ready for a long, bumpy and (quite likely) never-ending ride! Wednesday, August 24, 2005. A Webster vs. V. Akopian) (1992). Blacks's minor pieces have deeply penetrated white's position. Can anything be done? Possibly. Black spies 1. Qxb2. Is such a move wise? It is absolutely fatal! Leads to 1. Rxe2! Thus, the score is even, but white's woes have just begun. White's queen must fall back, but where? Forking the knight and queen! Posted by BlueEyedRook @ 11:28 PM.

My quest for Chess understanding. get ready for a long, bumpy and (quite likely) never-ending ride! Friday, October 28, 2005. I achieved a remarkable feat the other day. . . . four consecutive draws! The phenomenon is weird since I generally only draw about 7% of all my games. According to my math the probability is roughly 1 in 50,000 to have four draws in a row (based on my current 7% rate). My quest for Chess understanding. get ready for a long, bumpy and (quite likely) never-ending ride! Thursday, June 30, 2005. Well I am on the wagon - the band wagon. I purchased a couple programs (and also found this really cool "Chess Tactics Server" website) that focuses entirely on chess tactics. My goal is to work through at least 50 problems a day for the next month and see if it has any effect on my chess playing skills. Unquestionably. Am I getting better at chess? My quest for Chess understanding. get ready for a long, bumpy and (quite likely) never-ending ride! Friday, December 30, 2005. Bishops versus Knights (a general assessment). A bishop on the other hand, in the center of the board has 13 squares it can move to; and even in the worst of situations (again h8 for example) it has 7 possible moves. Based on this mobility gap, a bishop can easily render a poorly placed knight worthless. For example, take Diagram 1 (left). It guards 8 squares (marked as x-squares...
