Single woman tackles a farm with style. Strips, if you remember, was born then her mom died the next day of a freak accident. She was raised alone in my bathroom. I finally put her and her buddy outside. I thought that were going to be fine but Mac disappeared two days ago. Since then Strips is back to following me around and trying to get into the warm house. It seems I have one of those house chickens who rides on your shoulder. This entry was posted in Uncategorized. October 31, 2016. I’m glad I...

Gardener in Me | farmerista
https://farmerista.wordpress.com/2015/01/06/gardener-in-me
Single woman tackles a farm with style. I’m hoping to focus more on my garden/food forest this year. I’ve got ideas…but my ideas are bigger than my budget. The area I had cleared for logging would make an amazing terraced orchard. But doing it right and not destabilizing the hillside would be feat and likely cost more than we’d ever get back out of it. For now that dream in on the back burner. Now, though, I can at least work on making my pasture area a “food forest.”. Lots of things to consider. I am st...

Quick Thougths on Sustainability | farmerista
https://farmerista.wordpress.com/2015/02/01/quick-thougths-on-sustainability
Single woman tackles a farm with style. Quick Thougths on Sustainability. I am not sustainable. I am not sustainable. I have to purchase hay for the sheep until my pasture comes back from the traima of logging. Truck in grain for my pigs…the worst offense. This was not the plan…but its the easiest. its easy to lock up the pigs and throw food at them and watch them grow. I have to challenge myself to work on creating an ecosystem that doesn’t deplete the soil but improves it. Change better be coming soon.

Single woman tackles a farm with style. Where’d She Go? Sick boy with a fever. Did the farm fail? Did she find love? Did she win a million and decide to wander the world busking instead? Nonono.no. aaaaaaaaaaaaand…no. And a week later:. What are you looking at? Arn’t you a little young for this already? I had chicks, and got llamas…sold the rams, made some money, sold the pigs, made money, screwed up an order lost money, bought feed, lost money, so the cycle goes. Pigs and Pork | farmerista

Single woman tackles a farm with style. Welcome to Muddy Heart Ranch! Where pigs are raised with their health and happiness foremost. I raise my pigs as I see best suits them for the climate: summer out on pasture or in the woods, in the rainy winter they have solid shelter that doesn’t flood, but still access to outdoors. Currently my local feed is not organic though I am working on developing one that is. Roaster pigs run $5 a lb plus $45 USDA scrape and scald processing. Currently frozen roasters ...

While at the Farm Store… | farmerista

Single woman tackles a farm with style. While at the Farm Store…. I went to the farm store this evening to pick up supplies for castrating and docking I’m doing tommorrow (I toyed with the idea of ear tags be decided against it since they always get torn out anyway) and heard peeping. Chicks were in. How could I resist taking a “peep” (heeh…didn’t mean to do that! I bought my stuff, scored on some clearance items. Got in the car and my mother sent me back a text, “why didn’t you buy them? March 8, 2015.

Roy Boy | farmerista

Single woman tackles a farm with style. I couldn’t stand it anymore. Actually, more like I couldn’t stand the cat anymore. He spent alot of time playing and teasing Tabitha. They entertained each other and without Tabitha Darioosh became needy. Always in my lap, aways talking. Finally one day he followed me around the pasture yelling at me, “MEOW! 8221; He didn’t want food, or picked up or attention. He wanted me to get back Tabitha. And after death…life moves on. Its Baby Time! | farmerista
https://farmerista.wordpress.com/2015/02/24/its-baby-time
Single woman tackles a farm with style. I’ve been waiting on lambs all month. I put the ram in for early Feburary lambs…I’ve been waiting. And waiting…Finally came the lambs! I had a first! An all white ram! And a ewe lamb. Lovely! Off I went to work, but not before Peppercorn began to nest. I saved wool from skirting fleeces for her in a bag (as she was so fond of Blazes virgin fleece that she used it in her first nest) and as i was pulling it out of the bag she motioned “gimme gimme gimme! Lastly we ha...
