Note the lack of face stripes that sets it apart from chipmunks. It's also quite a bit larger, up to twelve inches long. During winter, they hibernate in ground burrows. Ook, she wrote. Tuesday, October 28, 2014. Nature Notes: Bees in Autumn. This is a photo from September. The hive was busy getting rid of all their drones, which is why there are so many dead bees lying at the bottom. The workers were grabbing drones and throwing them out, when I opened up the hive, they used the chance to just tip the drones over the rim instead of carrying them through the flight holes. Ook, she wrote. Saturday, August 18, 2012. Rather B Birdin: Juniper Titmouse. This adorable little guy is a Juniper Titmouse (Baeolophus ridgwayi) and shows why they have their name, sitting in a juniper bush. It opened the seed by hammering it against the branch. I took those photos at Dead Horse Point State Park. The titmice (there were at least two) were very curious and not at all shy. More birds at I'd Rather Be Birdin'. Links to this post. The bird gets its second name from the fact that it loves to feed on bananas, so much that the species is considered a pest at banana plantations.
