Monday, July 27, 2015. Let's look this week at jacquard fabric. You may have heard this term used for a kind of fabric but wondered exactly what it is. Brocade and damask are types of jacquard woven fabrics. And there are other fabrics that can be woven on a loom with a jacquard attachment such as jerseys. Below you can see a Jacquard attachment on a loom. Now, machines are computerized but still use a version of a Jacquard head attachment. Below is a Jacquard loom at Sunbury Textile Mills in Pennsylvania.

Monday, October 27, 2014. Know Your Chairs: The Panton Chair. Aside from vivid, vibrant, psychedelic interiors in the 60s and 70s, Verner Panton created quite an array of mind-bogglingly modern seating in his years as a designer. But none of them can surpass the popularity of the eponymously titled Panton chair. The deliberate sensuality of the curvy, S-shape keeps the design from being sterile. Created from a single piece of molded plastic, the chair is stackable and, of course, quite durable. His inter...

Monday, April 27, 2015. Designer Rugs: Beyond A Wow Factor! The worlds of interior design and fashion design often intersect since the approach to designing a room and designing a clothing collection includes similar elements of consideration like scale, color, texture, shape, material, repetition, contrast, symmetry/asymmetry, and the same attention to detail. Take a look at the late Alexander McQueen's. As one of its most attended shows in its history, seen by over 650,000 people), McQueen's sensibilit...

Monday, July 13, 2015. Beds: The Lit à la Polonaise. For this installation of Know Your Sofas, I am cheating a little bit. It is actually more like Know Your Beds. During the reign of Louis XVI, King of France, a style of bed known as a Lit à la Polonaise. Or a "Bed in the Polish Style" became quite popular. Why Polish? Or decorative ring or other shape in the center of the bed. The baldaquin. Of ostrich feathers. The bed can be seen at the Getty Center in Los Angeles. Jeff Fiorito, Allied ASID. Jeff Fio...

Monday, March 30, 2015. The Tradition of The Gatehouse. Interior Design is not only about interiors, but about architecture and historical styles as well. The outside of a dwelling should have something to do with the interior (although this "rule" may be judiciously broken for a design statement). And like so many things in life, the more one understands, the more one enjoys. The photo above is of Lee Stanton's stately yet comfortable English-style drawing room in Laguna Beach, California. And the follo...

Monday, January 26, 2015. For those of you who were a little anxious and short of breath contemplating a black kitchen last week, here is something to calm your color nerves. the good ol' classic white kitchen! There is something comforting about the brightness and cleanliness of a white kitchen. The absence of color lends itself to a super-modern approach:. But of course white looks great in a more traditional setting as well. Jeff Fiorito, Allied ASID. Monday, January 19, 2015. It seems like an unlikel...

Monday, June 29, 2015. History of Furniture: Biedermeier. The Industrial Revolution helped to expand the growing middle class and suddenly, the masses had access to wealth and leisure time like they never had before. They wanted to have nicer homes, nice furniture, and nice objects to show off their new-found wealth. But they did not want to appear ostentatious. So we have stately pieces of furniture being made in humble local woods (since exotic woods coming into Germany were being heavily. Kelly Wearst...
