This is what we came to Russia for! Luckily the weather cleared some a few hours later and the winds were helping to dry things out. Once the mountain was visible it really raised moral. What dropped moral was the Polish climber who stumbled in with bad frostbite and reports that he lost his teammate. They searched for two days by helicopter and never found him. With just a couple weeks until the race, Jean and Miles were both sick and doing everything possible to keep the germs away from me. I was terrified, I’d wake up in the middle of the night thinking about the race, and started obsessing over details. I tried to convince myself that this was just a healthy respect for what was upcoming, instead of my cocky attitude in 2006. When you have a goal that you. If it was easy, everybody would do it. We had permits to ascend via the Machame Route (a.k.a. Whiskey route, for its intoxicating views), traverse part of the South Circuit, summit, and descend via the Mweka Route. It's not the tourist route (a.k.a. Coca Cola route), has a lot less people on it, and gives us an extra day on the mountain to acclimatize. Approximately 39 miles round trip. Marangu hotel to Machame Gate to Machame camp. Machame camp to Shira camp. Shira camp to Barranco camp. Barranco camp to Barafu camp. Link to just pictures.

At the book festival, I’ll be on a panel discussing creative nonfiction on Friday, April 26, from 11 am-11:50 am and another panel talking about writing and publishing from 1:45 pm to 3 pm.
