This Jekyll Island photography site features the work of Bruce Gourley. Who has been photographing the island since 2005. While living in Montana now, Bruce grew up 90 miles inland from Jekyll and spent some time on the island as a child. Years. Later, he re-discovered Jekyll through a camera lens. Jekyll Island features some 20 miles of bike trails that traverse the island’s beach front, marshes, maritime forests and historic districts. Visitors can being their own bicycles or rent bikes on the island at the Jekyll Island Bike Rental Shop or at some hotel locations. Whether riding for a few hours or for the day, there is plenty to see from the vantage of a bicycle on Jekyll Island. A mix of clouds and sun. A stray shower or thunderstorm is possible. High 89F. As to the quality of the beach, Jekyll cannot claim the whitest sand, bluest water or best sea-shell hunting. Yet the wide expanses of sand along much of the beach front, plentiful sea shells, and absence of high-rise hotels or condos provide an unmatched peaceful and serene coastal experience. The story of Jekyll and the surrounding islands begins nearly a thousand years ago, when Creek Nation Native Americans occupied the area. They hunted, fished, and used native vegetation for food. Possibly, they grew foods such as maize and beans.
