The World Is Maths

The World Is Maths. The Importance of Vocabulary. Subject-specific vocabulary is extremely important. The right academic vocabulary turns a clumsy conversation into an elegant and precise one. It can be tempting to avoid complex words with students, especially those who aren’t the highest-attaining, yet I’d argue that, in the pursuit of increasing attainment, all our students benefit when they can express themselves clearly and succinctly. Whenever possible I believe they are more likely to remember it.

Adventures in Mastery 3: Prognostic Practice – The World Is Maths

https://jemmaths.wordpress.com/2016/10/27/adventures-in-mastery-3-prognostic-practice

The World Is Maths. Adventures in Mastery 3: Prognostic Practice. When rewriting our scheme of work for years 7 to 11. I was conscious that there were some perennial problems I wanted to try and solve. One such problem was that of algebraic misconceptions that arise year-in, year-out. I decided that I would try to address these with what I can best describe as. The problem of indices. Specifically when students write that. 2 The problems of expanding brackets. Specifically when students write that. This ...

The World Is Maths. Adventures in Mastery 4: Lesson Sequences. In my maths department we are starting on a journey of building a new curriculum based on the principles of mastery. To find out what mastery is, read Mark McCourt. I start a unit with a list of its objectives, then drill down into what I want students to think about most,. What I want them to practise most. What is the best order to teach things, and how I want to assess them as I go along. One-step (four operations),. I also have no problem...

The World Is Maths. Cognitive Load and Problem Solving. I was asked recently to deliver a training session for two maths departments on the topic of problem solving. After internally balking (problem solving as a discrete entity is something that gets on my nerves, “problem solving lessons” even more so) I decided it was the perfect opportunity to talk about cognitive load and relate it to the requested topic. The World Is Maths. Adventures in Mastery 1: Starting Our Journey. When you’ve been in education a while you see plenty of fads come and go and you become carefully cynical about the latest big pronouncement or the new product that’s going to “transform” your practice. And so it was that I responded (in my mind) when everyone started to talk about mastery. What could we learn from Shanghai or Singapore? They only teach two lessons a day, don’t you know? To us, it’s hardly going to be transferable. Politi...

The Wisdom of the Crowd – The World Is Maths

https://jemmaths.wordpress.com/2016/10/22/the-wisdom-of-the-crowd

The World Is Maths. The Wisdom of the Crowd. Sir Francis Galton was a statistician in the 19th century. Thanks to him we have concepts such as correlation and standard deviation. Galton, it would seem, thought through the filter of statistics, a genius who produced hundreds of papers and books on fields as diverse as meteorology, historiometry and psychometrics and who pioneered the use of questionnaires to gather better information for his statistical analyses. By the end of the evening we had 114 estim...

Conspicuous work: do we compound the workload issue ourselves? July 30, 2015. Assistant to the general manager! Do you know what that means? He could be asking my advice on trades. Trades, Jerry! Are these the best English subject textbooks you’ve ever seen? July 26, 2015. Textbooks have been in the news this past academic year. We’ve been told by Nick Gibb. To shed our “anti-textbook ethos”, whilst U.S. education advisor Richard Culatta has said. That British schools should scrap textbooks because they “are outdated, they are in a format that it’s not adaptable, and for students learning in other languages, they can’t press the word and get a definition.”. Unburden yourself here…. June 13, 2015. I have been following the tweets. With interest. As always with education conferences, there are some really smart ideas tossed out and hashtagged for posterity. But every now and again one of these edu-summits spews out a thought that is a real game changer. I think this may be that very thought:. Knowledge is becoming obsolete. With @Alastair Arnott. 10; Knowing how over knowing what! Mdash; Rachel Orr (@RachelOrr) June 13, 2015. Knowledge is becoming obsolete.

Activities: the devil will find work for idle hands to do. June 25, 2015. Some years ago, when I was still held firmly within the gravitational pull of my initial teacher training, I wrote a blog about. So praxis for Wilson was. He did things that he wanted to, and then he decided on the reasons for doing them afterwards. Some time after I wrote about praxis, I read (and rather enjoyed) Phil Beadle’s book. 8216;Dancing About Architecture’. Like Tony Wilson, Beadle advocated this post-rationalisation:.

You Can Do Anything! June 7, 2015. I’ve just read this article. On TES, entitled ‘Why education needs more fuzzy thinking’. In the article, Ewan McIntosh proposes a “fuzzy world” of education where there are “activities that help students to learn for themselves, synthesise complex information, generate large numbers of ambitious ideas and build prototypes”. It is also an education where there is “almost no content”. How does he think historians think like historians? You can do anything! June 7, 2015 at...

June 28, 2015. 8220;So, you’re wanting to be a London cabbie, then? Hope you’re prepared to put in all the hard work it takes to do the job? 8221; asked the slightly gruff, porcine man. 8220;Er, yes. I’ve just got the Blue Book, and I’ve started trying to learn the roads and runs and that…” replied the enthusiastic young man. Oh, yeh, you won’t be needing that. The Blue Book, I mean. We don’t really use that anymore for studying to be a cabbie.”. But it’s got all the runs and routes in it? 8220;Okay....

The Final Comedown: Nothing prepares me for the end of term. July 23, 2015. I’ve looted and I’ve begged. On the tubes of the Bec and Broadway. I’ve been run over by cars. And to prove it here’s the scars. I’ve been cut. I’ve been stitched. I’ve been buggered, bewitched and abandoned. But nothing in Heaven or Earth. Prepared me for this. It’s a victory worth sharing. We should celebrate I think. With the bloodiest of Marys. But I’m too * * ed to drink. But why do I need solace? A break. I couldn&#8217...

Saturday, 15 August 2015. When I was small, we had our groceries delivered each week. This was in addition to seperate deliveries for meat, milk and bread. The deliveries were from the neighbouring village of Tutbury from Parrick's the grocers there. It seems we have now come full circle. For about a decade now we have been using Ocado for our grocery deliveries, and we wonder why we had to suffer with actual supermarket shopping, especially the time it wasted. Where was Miss Roberts when we needed her?
