Kids in the Outdoors: Evaluating Risk. August 15, 2015. I logged onto my computer this morning, fired up the internet, and came across this post. On the 14ers.com Facebook page. The picture shows a couple proud parents and their happy looking kid on the summit of Handies Peak, one of the Colorado’s 54 14,000-foot mountains. I have seen a lot of people doing stupid things with kids in the outdoors (and who knows, maybe I’ve been accused of the same). I will never forget the day that I saw a fami...If you ...

June 28, 2015. I will be the first person to tell you that, despite whatever challenges you have, you can achieve your goals. I will tell you that no matter how busy you are, you can find a way to find the time to do the work. I will tell you to fight. But I’m not going to do that right now. Right now I’m going to tell you that sometimes it’s ok not to. And that sometimes you have to just let shit go. But I am human and sometimes I give in. And I found myself solo parenting a lot of the time. Sometimes h...

How to Adventure with your Significant Other (And Still Like Each Other Afterward). August 28, 2015. First let me say that I am overwhelmed by the response to my post about how trails have changed my life. Thanks to all of you that shared your stories. Knowing that I’m among kindred spirits feels pretty darn good! A video came across my Facebook feed this morning from the folks at Dakine. The meltdown this guy has at 1:20 looks a whole lot like when I threw down my camera gear and cried. The commercials ...

Packing for Kalalau: the GearPeak & Pixel

Packing for Kalalau: the Gear. August 10, 2015. Back in the spring, when we were planning our Kalalau Trail hike, I joined a Facebook group for the trail. In the months before the trip it was a perfect way to get advice on things like parking and packing and after the trip it became a great way to stay up to date on a place that is now near and dear to my heart. I have noticed that a few of the same questions come up. What should I pack? Should I take a tent or a hammock? What type of shoes should I wear?

Read This: All the Wild That Remains. August 13, 2015. While I’m a fairly rabid reader, I don’t typically do book reviews on this blog (maybe I should start? I figure that you come here for stories and pictures of my exploits in the great outdoors, not to listen to me opine on the novel I just finished or rant about how much I hated Wild (yes, it’s true! All the Wild that Remains. By David Gessner. Do yourselves all a favor and read it. The special behind-the-glass section at Back of Beyond Books. I hear...

Paddelboarding Leadville’s Turquoise Lake. August 14, 2015. I mentioned a couple weeks ago. That I am on a mission to paddle as many places as possible this summer. I added #8 to the list today – and it was a doozy. I found myself with a few child-free hours to kill this morning so I decided to give it a go. And since the furry dog hadn’t been out on the water yet this year, I decided to bring her along. I also knew that this was possibly a very bad idea. Put a 60-pound somewhat high-strung herding dog o...

Let’s Be Honest: Sometimes it Sucks. August 7, 2015. If we’re friends on Facebook or you follow me on Instagram. You’ve probably seen a lot of pictures lately that make it look like the kid and I are having a really good time. Pictures like this …. And this …. And this …. And while a lot of our life lately has been fun and games (because summer! It hasn’t all been awesomeness. But it’s not all good stuff. And it’s a hell of a lot of fun. Except when it’s not. And none of it makes for a very pretty picture.

Snapshots: A Cool and Creepy Night Up on Hoosier Pass. August 9, 2015. I’m not afraid of the dark,. I said to myself confidently as the furry dog and I headed out the door. It was around 11 pm and the first clear, moonless night since I had arrived in the mountains. I had been waiting for a few weeks to go shoot the stars and if ever there was a time to do it, this was it. I’m not afraid of the dark. I’m not afraid of the dark. I said, less confidently now, as I waited out the 30-second exposure I was us...
