Tiyaabu!: And the winner is...
http://jennyinmali.blogspot.com/2010/10/and-winner-is.html
Stories of my two years as a Peace Corps volunteer in Mali, West Africa. Thursday, October 21, 2010. And the winner is. Just kidding, there are no winners. Although I have been asked to share the top five books I've read this year (from July 2009 to July 2010). This proved to be a very difficult choice, as I've read quite a few (see list in side-bar), so I decided to split it into fiction and nonfiction. So in no particular order and without further ado:. Top 5 Nonfiction Books. Guns, Germs, and Steel.

Tiyaabu!: November 2010

Stories of my two years as a Peace Corps volunteer in Mali, West Africa. Tuesday, November 23, 2010. Yummy in the tummy! It is official: the garden is up and running! The watermelons are ready to harvest now too, so last night for dinner I had salad and a huge slice of watermelon for dessert! It honestly amazes me that the soil in our garden - very sandy - can produce gigantic juicy watermelons! Score one for food security! Again, so proud. I recently finished a book on the history of Timbuktu, and in it...

Stories of my two years as a Peace Corps volunteer in Mali, West Africa. Thursday, August 26, 2010. Dancing, Planting, and Fasting.oh my! Sorry it's been a while since my last post! Things have been (surprisingly! Busy, what with the new group of volunteers coming in and the old group leaving. So what have I been up to? Well, we had a huge. Was quite the big deal! I invited Ali, Sam, and Emily (other Peace Corps volunteers and close friends) to come to the fete with me - and they were not disappointed!

The Hot Tamali: November 2010
http://thehottamali.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html
Billy's Adventures in Mali, West Africa. Sunday, November 7, 2010. The road on the Mali side. The bridge under construction at the border. Once I reached Senegal, it was easy riding. The road is in perfect shape, a two lane road with packed gravel shoulders all the way from the border to Kedougou. There are milestones at every kilometer for the 112 km from the border to Kedougou, so I knew how much farther I had to go every kilometer of the trip. The new house puppy in Kedougou. Though it was fun to cook...
The Hot Tamali: July 2010
http://thehottamali.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html
Billy's Adventures in Mali, West Africa. Saturday, July 31, 2010. Obviously, I’m not tout seul (all alone), but it felt like that at first. I had to reevaluate my situation… am I crazy to stay here for another year? If it didn’t work out for the other guys, maybe this isn't for me either? Could I keep living here, being the only white person in a town of 12,000 people? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). I am a Peace Corps Volunteer (PCV), working on Small Enterprise Development in the Kayes region of Mali.
The Hot Tamali: January 2011
http://thehottamali.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html
Billy's Adventures in Mali, West Africa. Sunday, January 30, 2011. Wow, it has been a busy month. I travelled twice to Bamako and twice to Dakar with a few days in Kenieba between each trip. That's more than 1600 miles on the road. All that travel was worth it though, because my parents came to visit! Tuesday, January 4, 2011. Celebrating Christmas and Ringing In the New Year. The Christmas party was nice and relaxing. It was great to catch up with fellow second-year volunteers and meet some of the v...

Billy's Adventures in Mali, West Africa. Tuesday, February 9, 2010. There are fun events planned each night as well. Afterwards, I'm looking forward to some time on the beach and hanging out with friends before heading back to Kenieba. I'm also looking forward to escaping the heat that's creeping into Mali. It has been over 100 degrees here every day, and it's only getting warmer. They are protected in national parks in Senegal, so they thrive there. Senegal also benefits from the tourism; since the ...
The Hot Tamali: March 2010
http://thehottamali.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html
Billy's Adventures in Mali, West Africa. Saturday, March 20, 2010. Sorry for the long gap between blog posts. I have actually been busy, meeting with artisans, attending a regional training in Kayes, and working on a funding proposal, amongst other things. More on that later, but first, my awesome trip to Senegal in February:. The neighborhood where we stayed in Dakar was the exact opposite, and it was right on the ocean, a nice bonus! After the weekend of softball and fine dining in Dakar, some of us he...
The Hot Tamali: Training the Newbies
http://thehottamali.blogspot.com/2011/04/training-newbies.html
Billy's Adventures in Mali, West Africa. Tuesday, April 26, 2011. Sorry for the long gap between blog posts. I have actually been really busy the past few months! It was a really busy time for me, a full week of going around and checking on each group, but it was cool to see the trainees learning firsthand about starting and operating a small business in Mali. Though not all of the groups made a profit, they had a lot of fun with the project and gained a lot of knowledge and experience from it. Magazines...

Billy's Adventures in Mali, West Africa. Wednesday, July 6, 2011. Letter to a French Class in the US. The third goal of Peace Corps is to help Americans understand the people and cultures of other countries. Peace Corps encourages volunteers to correspond with a class in the US. Last year I sent a letter to a friend who teaches French in a middle school in New Jersey. Each of her students wrote me a letter and asked lots of questions! I thought you might enjoy reading the letter I sent back to them:.
The Hot Tamali: My Parent's Visit (1 of 2)
http://thehottamali.blogspot.com/2011/02/my-parents-visit-1-of-2.html
Billy's Adventures in Mali, West Africa. Thursday, February 3, 2011. My Parent's Visit (1 of 2). The following is the first of two posts about my parents' visit to Dakar and Kenieba, written by my mom. Enjoy! Visit to West Africa, January 2011, to visit Billy, PCV in Kenieba, Mali. It took a day and a half to make it to the border of Mali. We crossed the Falemé river from Senegal to Mali in a small dug out wooden boat. Unfortunately Billy’s host mom died in childbirth just weeks before we arrived&#...

Stories of my two years as a Peace Corps volunteer in Mali, West Africa. Monday, January 10, 2011. The Rulons Take Over Mali! Ha, just kidding, although in my opinion we would make great leaders. ;). A couple weeks ago my dad, mom, and sister Kathryn all came to visit me here in Mali! After a two-day long journey from Chicago to Bamako, they got in at 11pm and we went straight to the hotel. Kathryn's first impression: why all the dust and smoke? Overall, the Mali part of the trip was great! I got back to...

Jenny in New York
Jenny in New York. January 19, 2011 · 10:19 pm. Well after completing my 8th day on the new job, it took some inspiring words from Julie’s post. To motivate me to go to the gym. The one that I told myself was, “I’ve never regretted a workout”. It’s true! Once I make time for exercise and just DO it, I’m so happy with myself after. Today I did 30 minutes of weight training and 45 minutes of the stair-master (while watching. Okay look closer…? I kind of look like I’m levitating here right? I had some vanil...

I actually left Nigeria over a month ago now, but in order to surprise a friend at her hen night, I decided not to post anything about it. And then, the hurtling pace of life in the UK just kind of took over and I forgot that I had unfinished business on this blog. So farewell, Nigeria; I can’t thank you enough. Wednesday, November 9, 2011. Joy As far as...
