Jeremy's Trip to Antarctica

Jeremy's Trip to Antarctica. Thursday, June 5, 2014. I put together a little slideshow forever ago and just barely got around to putting it up on Youtube. This is pretty much the 5 week long trip in 11 mins so it goes fast! Monday, January 16, 2012. Well we made it to New Zealand finally! C-17 touching down at Pegasus. Finishing up the loading of the plane with cargo while the crowd waits to board. Waiting for 2 hours to board. Looking forward from my seat. Even though we were technically considered to h...

Jeremy's Trip to Antarctica: Last Day on the Ice

http://jeremyantarctica.blogspot.com/2012/01/last-day-on-ice.html

Jeremy's Trip to Antarctica. Thursday, January 12, 2012. Last Day on the Ice. Well, barring any weather delays, I should be leaving McMurdo tonight sometime between 2 and 4 AM (McMurdo Time aka New Zealand time)! If everything goes according to plan, I will get back to the U.S. on January 14th local time. I will spend tomorrow night in Christchurch then leave the next morning for the States. There's still a post or two that I want to do, so hopefully I will have time to do that soon. Last Day on the Ice.

Jeremy's Trip to Antarctica: Penguins!

http://jeremyantarctica.blogspot.com/2012/01/penguins.html

Jeremy's Trip to Antarctica. Friday, January 13, 2012. After we finished cleaning up the lab, I decided to take the 10-minute walk down to Hut Point to see if there were any penguins hanging out. As I looked over the ridge down to the sea ice, there was a group of three of them! These penguins are called Adélie Penguins. Which are pretty small penguins only about 2 feet tall. Soon after I got there, they started moving. They do waddle some but they love to slide along on their belly! I was worried that t...

Jeremy's Trip to Antarctica: How we sample

http://jeremyantarctica.blogspot.com/2012/01/how-we-sample.html

Jeremy's Trip to Antarctica. Sunday, January 1, 2012. Tomorrow, we're scheduled to go out into the field to do our last sampling for the season. I figured I should explain what we do when we sample. I took some pictures of Byron collecting a sample at the LTM plots at the south side of Lake Hoare so I'll explain it below the pictures. Byron wanted to make sure that I got a picture of the whirling action! After we finish sampling, we sometimes have treatments to apply to the plots. You might remember ...

Jeremy's Trip to Antarctica: Flight Update

http://jeremyantarctica.blogspot.com/2012/01/flight-update.html

Jeremy's Trip to Antarctica. Thursday, January 12, 2012. There was a South Korean fishing boat that caught fire less than 400 miles north of here. Three of the crew members are dead. Seven of the injured fishermen are on board a U.S. Antarctic Program research vessel heading toward McMurdo right now. They are supposed to be medevaced to Christchurch on my flight. Here are some news articles about it:. Http:/ www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/news/6247766/US-jet-to-evacuate-hurt-inferno-ship-crew.

Jeremy's Trip to Antarctica: Off the Ice!

http://jeremyantarctica.blogspot.com/2012/01/off-ice.html

Jeremy's Trip to Antarctica. Monday, January 16, 2012. Well we made it to New Zealand finally! I was getting worried last night because the flight down here was given a two-hour weather delay, but everything proceeded normally after that. We never did figure out where the supposed weather problems were at, since it was blue skies in McMurdo and the online weather report for Christchurch was the same. C-17 touching down at Pegasus. Waiting for 2 hours to board. Looking forward from my seat. Even though we...

Helo flights canceled and we’re grounded in McMurdo | The World of Nematodes

https://nemablog.wordpress.com/2015/01/11/helo-flights-canceled-and-were-grounded-in-mcmurdo

The World of Nematodes. Diana Wall's Soil Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning Lab. Helo flights canceled and we’re grounded in McMurdo. January 11, 2015 in Field Season. Working in the dry valleys requires that we travel from station to our field sites by helicopter. There aren’t any roads, there’s a giant field of sea ice between the dry valleys and McMurdo Station, and time is extremely valuable. So, (to my everlasting delight) we travel by helicopter. The World of Nematodes. Diana Wall's Soil Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning Lab. January 23, 2015 in Field Season. Most of the time they were there, the weather was pretty bad, but, luckily, windows of good weather opened up when the helicopter dropped them off and when it came to pick them up. Check out the video that Byron took of Zach blowing sediment off of the moss beds, revealing a vibrant green carpet underneath. Is the sediment insulating the moss? On Monday, Byron, Ashley, Tandra, and Matt ...

The World of Nematodes. Diana Wall's Soil Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning Lab. A successful day of fieldwork! January 16, 2015 in Field Season. We made it to the field yesterday! We are very happy scientists! In the helicopter on the way to F6, we passed over the icebreaker, USCGC Polar Star. This ship is cutting a channel for the resupply vessel to reach McMurdo Station in a few weeks. It’s amazing that the ship can break through several meters of sea ice! At the stoichiometry plots at F6 yesterd...

The World of Nematodes. Diana Wall's Soil Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning Lab. 25 years on Ice! January 27, 2015 in Colorado State University. Diana Wall first came down to the ice in 1989 to study nematodes in Antarctic soils. At the time, no one thought that anything was living in the Dry Valley soils they were dry, salty, and no plant life could be seen how could animals be living belowground? When McMurdo Dry Valleys. For 25 years, Diana has shared her Antarctic experiences and science with nu...

The World of Nematodes. Diana Wall's Soil Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning Lab. January 25, 2015 in Colorado State University. Jeremy Annear : An artist celebrated around the globe, painting european modernist art & abstract art

To identify and celebrate the structures behind appearences is of more lasting satisfaction than simply to echo what we see around us. Jeremy Annears investigation into the vizulaizing of the real world has led him into a branch of philosophical speculation. In his best work, absolute beauty meets relative beauty in a new sublime harmony.
