Weekly Torah from Jeremy Rosen. Wednesday, September 29, 2010. And would they have understood the notion of the earth revolving around the sun thousands of years before Galileo? There are six creative days of chapter one, but only one in, "This is the story of the heavens and the earth on the day. Sometimes the many facets of an idea are conveyed sequentially, each new description adding an extra and important dimension. It is not that there is a contradiction, simply an expansion. The Kabbalists argued ...

Weekly Torah from Jeremy Rosen. Thursday, May 27, 2010. The command is given to make a candelabrum of seven branches in the Tabernacle. A detailed description has already been given to Betzalel much earlier in Exodus and now that the Priesthood has been established and Aharon and his sons have been "dedicated", they are commanded to make sure that lights should burn on this "menorah" perpetually. Posted by Rabbi Jeremy Rosen @ 4:11 PM. Thursday, May 20, 2010. One of the stranger laws of the Torah is that...

Weekly Torah from Jeremy Rosen: June 2010

Weekly Torah from Jeremy Rosen. Thursday, June 24, 2010. Then more important messengers come back with a higher offer and again Bilam demurs and goes even further, "Even if Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold I could not go against the word YHVH, my God." Seems pretty conclusive. Indeed, he uses the name YHVH unlike Melchizedek who used EL ELYON. The angel finally appears to Bilam and tells again to go on but only to speak as he is told. Combining a traditional Jewish outlook with a critical perspective on religious and political issues. August 23, 2004. The March of Folly. One can understand why Saddam Hussein suppressed his family and perhaps how that oppression was responsible for turning him into the very antithesis of Islamic spirituality he is, another example of an extremist holding everyone else up to ransom. The only response is to call his bluff and rid the country of him. We of the silent majority must stop being silent. All o...

Combining a traditional Jewish outlook with a critical perspective on religious and political issues. October 17, 2004. Money only talks to those who listen! According to the Talmud wealth is more due to chance or Divine Intervention than to any personal qualities. (Though it does seem to me that single-mindedness- with a dollop of opportunism- helps! The Jewish version of He who pays the piper calls the tune. But anyone more than vaguely familiar with Jews knows that racial characteristics do not apply ...

Combining a traditional Jewish outlook with a critical perspective on religious and political issues. July 11, 2004. In Africa, millions are fleeing their homes, tens of thousands of innocent men, women and children have been murdered, a campaign of ethnic cleansing, driving people from their homes is underway. And would you believe it? Not a motion in the United Nations, no condemnation from the Security Council, not a peep, just a visit from Kofi. Why doesn’t the world give a damn? Links to this post.

Combining a traditional Jewish outlook with a critical perspective on religious and political issues. April 11, 2005. The papers have been full of the death of the Pope. Tributes from Jews. Have been flooding in. In Jewish terms, it could be argued. He was the best and most pro-Jewish pope ever. He was, after all, the first pope to visit the Western Wall. Despite all this, I still consider Pope John 23rd. John Paul might have helped free Poland, but did little for South America. He was a diplomat and...

Weekly Torah from Jeremy Rosen: December 2009
http://jeremyrosenparshah.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html
Weekly Torah from Jeremy Rosen. Sunday, December 27, 2009. No personality in the Torah seems to have more impact after his death than Yaakov. In his final speech he sets out different roles for each tribe and decides that Judah will be the primary tribe and dispossesses Reuven, the firstborn. He sets the tone for the future of the Jewish people. Does Yosef protest because he has experienced the consequences of preferential treatment and does not want them repeated? Weekly Torah from Jeremy Rosen: February 2010
http://jeremyrosenparshah.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html
Weekly Torah from Jeremy Rosen. Thursday, February 25, 2010. We have managed with priests only being symbolic for two thousand years. What values can we learn from them? We all need examples to look up to. After all, the Jewish people were expected to live a really spiritual life to show it was possible to follow God and yet still play an important role in everyday life. The priests were supposed to be similar examples within Judaism. Posted by Rabbi Jeremy Rosen @ 6:43 PM. Thursday, February 18, 2010.
