Jerry's Birding / Digiscoping Blog: Russian River Wine Country - 27 Jul 2015
http://jerryjourdan.blogspot.com/2015/08/russian-river-wine-country-27-jul-2015.html
Sunday, August 9, 2015. Russian River Wine Country - 27 Jul 2015. Robin and I had dinner with some of her conference colleagues last evening at Scalas in downtown San Francisco. Toby Trevarthen, a former Michiganian and current Northern Californian, was quite familiar with Sonoma Wine Country. And offered to send us some links to places to check out when head north over the Golden Gate Bridge this morning. We were so glad he did! For another cup of coffee and pow-wow to plan our day. So we drove there on...
Jerry's Birding / Digiscoping Blog: Baylands Nature Preserve, Pt II - 26 Jul 2015
http://jerryjourdan.blogspot.com/2015/08/i-returned-to-bayland-nature-preserve.html
Sunday, August 9, 2015. Baylands Nature Preserve, Pt II - 26 Jul 2015. I returned to the Bayland Nature Preserve in Palo Alto this morning to spend some time with the shorebirds. Clear skies and warming temps were a match from two days ago. I pulled into the lot next to the dead trees and immediately spotted a female Hooded Oriole. Atop one of the trees. As I grabbed the scope to digiscope it a pair of Bewick's Wrens. Appeared, followed by a pair of Anna's Hummingbirds. A juvenile Downy Woodpecker. I rea...
Jerry's Birding / Digiscoping Blog: Land's End! - 25 Jul 2015
http://jerryjourdan.blogspot.com/2015/08/lands-end-25-jul-2015.html
Thursday, August 6, 2015. I drove out to Sutro Heights this morning and birded the Land's End area of coastal San Francisco. My goal? An Allen's Hummingbird. It was going to be tough since it was foggy and breezy as I pulled into the parking lot just a short walk away from the historic Cliff House. I hiked down the hill and took some pics of the Western Gulls. On the beach, and the Brandt's Cormorants. On the rocks just out from shore. Brown Pelicans, Pigeon Guillemots. And a pair of Black Oystercatchers.
Jerry's Birding / Digiscoping Blog: Osprey! - 20 May 2015
http://jerryjourdan.blogspot.com/2015/05/osprey-20-may-2015.html
Wednesday, May 20, 2015. At 4 pm this afternoon Asia and I were sitting on the sidewalk in front of Brownton Abbey (waiting for Robin to come home) an Osprey. Flew over the house! I spooked both cats as I ran indoors to grab the camera, and came out to see a pair of birds circling over the house. I was able to get a few flight shots as they soared low over the house. Avian Tendencies: October 2011
http://aviantendencies.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html
Birding, listing, and digiscoping in Kent Co., Michigan and beyond. Wednesday, October 26, 2011. Not sure why birding is this way, but like shooting a basketball or playing a slot machine, the hits often come in bursts. (Is this not the true definition of mathematical chaos? Tuesday, October 18, 2011. A good Kent Co tick, and not the age class I expected. The birds frequented these 3 locations throughout our visit. Here are the best photos I could manage of them:. So, I believe these two birds have to be...
Avian Tendencies: The Holland State Park jaeger, and the morass that is juvenile jaeger ID
http://aviantendencies.blogspot.com/2013/09/the-holland-state-park-jaeger-and.html
Birding, listing, and digiscoping in Kent Co., Michigan and beyond. Friday, September 27, 2013. The Holland State Park jaeger, and the morass that is juvenile jaeger ID. So you know the old adage "the best way to learn is to teach"? So on Friday September 20th, I received a call from Curtis Dykstra that a darkish juvenile jaeger was sitting on the beach at Holland SP. I mean, does anyone looking at this photo think the R1s are pointed? Here is Pyle's treatment of uppertail coverts in juvenile jaegers, th...
Avian Tendencies: March 2013
http://aviantendencies.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html
Birding, listing, and digiscoping in Kent Co., Michigan and beyond. Tuesday, March 12, 2013. Update on Ross's Goose candidate, March 12. The bird spent the night at the 100th St flooding in Caledonia with the 11 Greater White-fronteds, and I got much better looks at the Ross's this morning, March 12. It does indeed appear to be a pure Ross's (or within variation of what we define as pure Ross's currently, more accurately stated! Here is checklist, video, photos, and discussion:. Monday, March 11, 2013.

Dr. Bob's Bird Blog: May 2015
http://drbobsbirdblog.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
Dr Bob's Bird Blog. Thursday, May 7, 2015. Recap of birding "The Biggest Week". I am working n a couple of new posts about the Biggest Week in American Birding. One will be about what I call "senior birding". My hips just do not like hiking and standing as much as they used to and the event and area offer so many things that do not require extensive effort. Another will be showcasing photos I have not shared previously. "Stay tuned". In MY mind it is all the same book! I am an addict! Then just use the b...
Dr. Bob's Bird Blog: Biggest Week: Pearson Metropark and a ramble on Kenn's Coverts
http://drbobsbirdblog.blogspot.com/2013/05/biggest-week-pearson-metropark-and.html
Dr Bob's Bird Blog. Sunday, May 26, 2013. Biggest Week: Pearson Metropark and a ramble on Kenn's Coverts. I am going to start with a "ramble". The rest of the subject will be addressed shortly . This was our last day for attending The Biggest Week in American Birding. Anyway, I decided then that I would not push it as far on the next day, and just head home for the two hour drive in the morning. It was a good decision - but, damn! It not only taught me about birds, but it also taught me about how I learn!
Dr. Bob's Bird Blog: May 2014

Dr Bob's Bird Blog. Friday, May 30, 2014. BWIAB - A highlight. Banding demo at BSBO. I am finally getting around to posting memories from The Biggest Week in American Birding. We always take home SO many memories and photographs from BWIAB, it is almost overwhelming to try to write about them! To see all of the scheduled happenings. But sometimes it is just serendipity that establishes permanent unexpected memories. Off to one side of the parking lot by the Optics Alley tent, there was a woman presenting...
Dr. Bob's Bird Blog: Biggest Week in American Birding - A fisherman has become a birder! I FEEL IT!
http://drbobsbirdblog.blogspot.com/2015/04/biggest-week-in-american-birding.html
Dr Bob's Bird Blog. Wednesday, April 8, 2015. Biggest Week in American Birding - A fisherman has become a birder! Caveat: Anyone who knows me also knows I tend to "ramble"! And here I give insight into my past as well as how my new overwhelming fascination of things that tend to fly rather than submerge. Hey! Birds are just things from the skies rather than things from the depths, but it is all similar! And, birding is much more easily accessible! Yeah It is a long one, but cheaper than buying a new book!
Dr. Bob's Bird Blog: Playing States and Plates at the Biggest Week in American Birding
http://drbobsbirdblog.blogspot.com/2013/05/playing-states-and-plates-at-biggest.html
Dr Bob's Bird Blog. Tuesday, May 14, 2013. Playing States and Plates at the Biggest Week in American Birding. Let's play "States and Plates" for the birds! This is a fun game for kids! And anyone who birds will know it is also a great - and much easier - game for adults. It is sure much easier to spot and record license plates than trying to spot warblers flitting in trees or lurking in the underbrush on the forest floor! Judy and I started going to the Biggest Week in American Birding. I remember that o...

Wednesday, March 28, 2018. South America, Day 15 - 03 Mar 2018. Last bird of the trip was seen early this morning when I photograph what appears to be a Pomarine Jaeger. Flying out from the ship. Its bulky shape, thin necklace and dark markings along the flanks appear to be good match. The next day and a half would yield no more birds until we reach Miami. South America, Day 14 - 02 Mar 2018. 02 Mar 2018 – Cartegena, Colombia. Magnificent Frigatebirds, Brown Pelicans, Royal. Foraged in shallow ponds left...

Tuesday, January 2, 2018. Favorite Images of 2017 - 31 Dec 2017. This Ivory Gull was arguably the best bird seen in Michigan in 2017, and I had the fortunate opportunity to digiscope it from close range just 2 days before it passed. The gull was one of my last captures with the Zeiss 85T*Fl Diascope before selling it in favor of a new Swarovski STX85 scope. The images below represent some of my favorites of the year. Looking forward to 2018! Loggerhead Shrike, Pawnee National Grasslands, CO. Perched atop...
