Avian Tendencies: October 2011
http://aviantendencies.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html
Birding, listing, and digiscoping in Kent Co., Michigan and beyond. Wednesday, October 26, 2011. Not sure why birding is this way, but like shooting a basketball or playing a slot machine, the hits often come in bursts. (Is this not the true definition of mathematical chaos? Tuesday, October 18, 2011. A good Kent Co tick, and not the age class I expected. The birds frequented these 3 locations throughout our visit. Here are the best photos I could manage of them:. So, I believe these two birds have to be...

Avian Tendencies: The Holland State Park jaeger, and the morass that is juvenile jaeger ID
http://aviantendencies.blogspot.com/2013/09/the-holland-state-park-jaeger-and.html
Birding, listing, and digiscoping in Kent Co., Michigan and beyond. Friday, September 27, 2013. The Holland State Park jaeger, and the morass that is juvenile jaeger ID. So you know the old adage "the best way to learn is to teach"? So on Friday September 20th, I received a call from Curtis Dykstra that a darkish juvenile jaeger was sitting on the beach at Holland SP. I mean, does anyone looking at this photo think the R1s are pointed? Here is Pyle's treatment of uppertail coverts in juvenile jaegers, th...

Avian Tendencies: March 2013
http://aviantendencies.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html
Birding, listing, and digiscoping in Kent Co., Michigan and beyond. Tuesday, March 12, 2013. Update on Ross's Goose candidate, March 12. The bird spent the night at the 100th St flooding in Caledonia with the 11 Greater White-fronteds, and I got much better looks at the Ross's this morning, March 12. It does indeed appear to be a pure Ross's (or within variation of what we define as pure Ross's currently, more accurately stated! Here is checklist, video, photos, and discussion:. Monday, March 11, 2013.

Intrepid Manitoban: April 2010
http://intrepidmanitoban.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html
Friday, April 30, 2010. Trip Report - Southwest. My scanning project was waylaid by a s-l-o-o-o-o-w computer, that problem is fixed, but now I've got new ones! Can't use my faithful "Riptide" image program, so the pics in this post are uncropped and not resized. But we finally got to take a trip! Had to pack all of our birding into one day, but we managed! One of the first birds we spotted was a far off Swainson's Hawk! This fellow looks like he's crossing his legs. A bit more classic pose. We also saw a...

Avian Tendencies: May 2011
http://aviantendencies.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html
Birding, listing, and digiscoping in Kent Co., Michigan and beyond. Wednesday, May 25, 2011. Long time no post. And not for lack of good birds- just for lack of time! I will not go into a ton of detail with this post, but just provide some bullet points for what has happened in Kent Co. the past 10 days or so. Next up are a group of Brewer's Blackbirds at a NEW location: some black earth celery fields in NW Kent Co., which I bumped into yesterday evening:. As i was watching these birds I heard the local ...

Avian Tendencies: February 2012
http://aviantendencies.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html
Birding, listing, and digiscoping in Kent Co., Michigan and beyond. Sunday, February 19, 2012. Solving the riddle of the raven. No, that title is not some poetic reference (I am not well-rounded enough to have such things at my fingertips). Rather than quoth the raven, I just want to know where she lives. OK, so on March 15, 2009 ( http:/ ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist? I got one crappy video of the bird by digiscoping with my point and shoot, which is here:. But this isn't going to do much other than sh...

Avian Tendencies: Putative Ross's Goose
http://aviantendencies.blogspot.com/2011/03/putative-rosss-goose.html
Birding, listing, and digiscoping in Kent Co., Michigan and beyond. Tuesday, March 8, 2011. As with all Ross's Geese, one must consider and eliminate all possibilities of Snow Goose X Ross's Goose hybrids and backcrosses in order to count such a bird. This one is no exception. My analysis is still underway, but currently goes about like this:. 1) Body size (not as small as some Ross's, but not too big to cause alarm as there is sexual dimorphism in this trait). 4) Beak not too long or bulky overall.

Avian Tendencies: December 2011
http://aviantendencies.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html
Birding, listing, and digiscoping in Kent Co., Michigan and beyond. Thursday, December 15, 2011. A little out-of-county jaunt. But this was no ordinary chase. This was a bird (Slaty-backed Gull) we've been thinking about for many years now, but haven't even had a candidate to chase after anywhere in Michigan. The only existing Michigan record. Monday, December 5, 2011. The joy of long-distance Thayer's Gull identfication. One of my easiest remaining Kent Co. ticks is Thayer's Gull. Problem is, th...Long ...
