Jerusalem of Gold(stein): Be Happy; It's Adar
http://jerusalemofgoldstein.blogspot.com/2010/03/be-happy-its-adar.html
By Rabbi Elyse Goldstein. Tuesday, March 2, 2010. Be Happy; It's Adar. Purim in Israel is a hoot. Costumes everywhere, like Halloween on steroids. Everybody dresses up, there are lots of parties, the merchants in Machane Yehuda don wigs and give out free hamentashen (called "Haman's ears" here- oznei Haman. Two solid weeks before Purim the kids stop having "real" school and it's all about celebrating. The fun is supposed to start on Rosh Hodesh Adar. Or rains of blessing. Purim day was sunny and ever...
Jerusalem of Gold(stein): Tel Aviv: The City that Doesn't Sleep
http://jerusalemofgoldstein.blogspot.com/2010/05/tel-aviv-city-that-doesnt-sleep.html
By Rabbi Elyse Goldstein. Tuesday, May 4, 2010. Tel Aviv: The City that Doesn't Sleep. Something you don't see every day:. An Arab woman in full face covering buying halva from a secular Israeli at a Tel Aviv street fair. In his book A Tale of Love and Darkness. My friend and tour guide Zvi Levran puts it this way— Tel Aviv: sand, sea, and the search for identity. Who is thinking about Jewish identity here that goes beyond building a city out of sand dunes? 8221; What a blessing to have the choice.
Jerusalem of Gold(stein): February 2010
http://jerusalemofgoldstein.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html
By Rabbi Elyse Goldstein. Sunday, February 14, 2010. My only association with poppy fields is a poem (by John McCrae) most Canadians know well. “In Flanders Field, the poppies grow.” The poem is quite sad, reminding us of young soldiers whose lives have been cut short by war. You came to see the calaniyot? How the heck are you? 8221; How tough and how soft they are at the same time. How contradictory and how integrated at the same time. During the British Mandate, the soldiers were nicknamed calaniyot by...
Jerusalem of Gold(stein): December 2009
http://jerusalemofgoldstein.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html
By Rabbi Elyse Goldstein. Saturday, December 26, 2009. The Chanukah That Wasn’t. So imagine my surprise when Chanukah came and went in Jerusalem without any hoopla at all. It was so understated that one could practically have missed it. “ That. Does it have to be all or nothing? It’s like Israel has gone the other way: since we don’t have Christmas (except in the Old City) let’s not have Chanukah either? But there were lots of sufganiot in all the bakery windows for a full month before Chanukah! To be ab...
Jerusalem of Gold(stein): Free Jerusalem
http://jerusalemofgoldstein.blogspot.com/2009/12/free-jerusalem.html
By Rabbi Elyse Goldstein. Tuesday, December 1, 2009. We debated: after all, the Kotel has been designated as an Orthodox synagogue rather than as a historical site (this after a 20 year battle from Women of the Wall. To be able to read from a Torah on the women’s side) and those who enter an Orthodox site should abide by the rules of that community. On the other hand, since when is the Kotel a synagogue? December 8, 2009 at 5:24 AM. December 9, 2009 at 12:58 AM. December 21, 2009 at 4:40 PM. Just found y...

Torah From Toronto: Thoughts on My Mother's Shloshim
http://torahfromtoronto.blogspot.com/2014/06/thoughts-on-my-mothers-shloshim.html
Tuesday, 3 June 2014. Thoughts on My Mother's Shloshim. Time takes on new meaning when you are a mourner. My days used to be bounded by what time my work out class is; now they are bounded by what time minyan is. I counted the Omer different last year; this year I count the Omer by what minyan it is, keeping a minyan journal every day of where and when I say Kaddish: Minyan 1 the day after the funeral; minyan 30, today. Tradition has it that Rosh Chodesh Sivan is the day on which the Jewish people camped...
Torah From Toronto: November 2013
http://torahfromtoronto.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html
Wednesday, 13 November 2013. I cannot fully describe the sound of 600 women singing with fervour. From the men’s side—unusually sparse that day—a microphone drowned out our voices. But just as we began the Shema, the microphone suddenly went silent. We were stunned to find out that the police had cut the electricity, allowing us to proceed without having to engage in a prayer-shouting match. I understand those for whom the Western stones are the only stones which have the weight of tradition. In my d...
Torah From Toronto: July 2013

Monday, 15 July 2013. Why I’m Not Fasting this Tisha b'Av. Tonight at sundown the Jewish people will be marking a day of national tragedy- the destruction of the First and Second Temples. Those destructions also marked the end of the priesthood and the sacrificial system. The end of the “unity” of a people with one national shrine, one national ritual, one national way of worshipping. During Rabbinic school I fasted, frankly, to be holier-than-thou, more religious than my already right-leaning classmates.
Torah From Toronto: February 2012

Monday, 13 February 2012. Who Will Be The Next Gunther Plaut? I, like most of the rest of the Jewish world, was deeply saddened to read of the passing of Rabbi Gunther Plaut. So when the opportunity to serve at Holy Blossom came, I jumped at the chance to be close to a real Rabbi’s Rabbi; a scholar who cared about the world outside his books and an activist who could quote the Rambam off by heart. Now the question must be asked: who will be the next Rabbi Plaut? Please share with me your thoughts and the...

Tuesday, 27 December 2011. Happy "Secular" New Year? 8220;Should old acquaintance be forgot.” It's a brand new (secular) year. Unless you live in Israel, this secular new year is your new year too; unless you write 5772 in your chequebook it’s safe to assume you’ll be writing 2012 and “Judaizing” the change of year in January by wishing your coworkers a “happy and healthy. Torah From Toronto: On Saying the last Kaddish of 11 months
http://torahfromtoronto.blogspot.com/2015/03/on-saying-last-kaddish-of-11-months.html
Tuesday, 24 March 2015. On Saying the last Kaddish of 11 months. Last night I could not sleep. The night before my final daily Kaddish of 11 months for my mother felt just like the night before the funeral again. A weird floating feeling of being untethered, without an anchor back to earth. “Sometimes I feel like a motherless child”—today it hit home. I must admit I don’t like this command, but I understand it totally. All during the year the liturgy changes to reflect the season, and how much we mourner...
Torah From Toronto: March 2015
http://torahfromtoronto.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Wednesday, 25 March 2015. The weeks before Pesach I see countless Facebook posts lamenting how much people “hate” Passover, and what a hassle it all is. Pesach is often so overwhelming that cruises and hotels offer Seders so we can get away from home at this special time of year. Simplifying Pesach is another answer. I'd like to share with you 5 tips for an easier and meaningful Passover this year. Take what you like and throw the rest away with your left-over matza. 3 Learn which foods need to be marked...
Torah From Toronto: September 2013
http://torahfromtoronto.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
Monday, 9 September 2013. The Cult of Busy. Day One Rosh Hashana. Earlier this year I received a document via email—maybe some of you did too— entitled How To Succeed at Work. Here is its advice:. Always walk with a document in your hands: People with documents in their hands look like hardworking employees heading for important meetings. People with newspapers in their hands look like they are going to the washroom. I don’t know about you, but I am guilty as charged. And I would add a number 7...8221; A...
Torah From Toronto: January 2014
http://torahfromtoronto.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html
Sunday, 5 January 2014. This Ain't Your Father's Reform. A few Shabbatot ago I prayed at a Baptist-style tent-revival Amen-Halleluyah neo-Hasidic Jewish service. Yes, that was Biennial Shabbat and although I was prepared for the spirit of it based on my years at NFTY, I wasn’t quite prepared for the spiritual of it. Would “we rise and recite the watchword of our faith? 8221; Would we sit for the standing prayer? Would we drone on in responsive readings? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Promote your Page too.

Jerusalem of Gold(stein)
By Rabbi Elyse Goldstein. Monday, May 31, 2010. My very special year in Israel is coming to a close; this June blog will be my last from what my friend and tour guide Zvi Levran calls "The Over-Promised Land". It is almost impossible—no, make that it is. What will I miss most about Israel? Real humus, and people pronouncing it correctly (versus middle Americans who call it hum-us instead of hoo-moose). Living on Jewish calendar time. Not having to explain what Shmini Atzeret is. The parade of monks, nuns...
