Prior to this I graduated from Durham University. This is a personal website and blog where I’ll be rambling, hopefully coherently, about my explorations into the world of digital journalism. 039;It's not what a movie is about, it's how it is about it' – Roger Ebert. Sourcing data using Freedom of Information requests. For a project at City we had to use the Freedom of Information Act 2000. To unearth non-public data for a story. I was first introduced to FOI while researching a story about hospital car parking rates on work experience at The Independent. It struck me as a brilliant way to discover many possible leads for insightful investigations. While FOI requests can lead to great stories.

039;It's not what a movie is about, it's how it is about it' – Roger Ebert. New kids on my 2013 radar. Time to kickstart the new year with some new tunes! Taking the flirtation a little further with Friends (check out ‘Friend Crush’), Imagine Dragons, Walk the Moon, and Haim should set you up for a night of musical fireworks. The latter trio of LA sisters have been dubbed Fleetwood Mac-esque (with a ‘nu-folk’ twist, natch) and opened for Florence the Machine only last month. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

Who is the perfect Doctor? | datacrumble
https://datacrumble.wordpress.com/2013/08/04/who-is-the-perfect-doctor
Data journalism blog by @GRBArnett. August 4, 2013. Who is the perfect Doctor? This is a bit of fun. Probably (see-definitely) not statistically sound. In a live show hosted tonight on BBC1, Matt Smith’s replacement as the Doctor will be unveiled. But what can the Timelord’s past incarnations tell us the man (or woman) whose face will be revealed tonight will look like? Sources: Celebheights, How tall is Doctor Who? Click on graph for full interactive). Finally, the third metric is height. The titan ...

Data journalism blog by @GRBArnett. May 10, 2013. Why your graph should be as simple as possible (also motion charts). A few weeks ago I attempted my first motion chart. I suspect that Rosling will go down as the David Bowie of statisticians, his alternative and exciting graphs breathing life into statistics. As Rosling’s graph shows it works really well when you can have two statistical measures because then two changes over time can be shown. In February I made a bubble chart showing the different mode...

Data journalism blog by @GRBArnett. May 10, 2013. Islington Now – and working on data in the newsroom. In March, I worked on Islington Now. A hyperlocal blog and unpublished newspaper that forms part of our MA timetable. Throughout the three weeks that it was running I worked on some data stories there and these are some of my reflections. You guys are good with numbers, right? During the second week, I was passed numbers from the National Housing Federation. By reporter Ben Finch that showed their estim...

Using “separators and labels” in Outwit Hub pro – open notes | datacrumble

Data journalism blog by @GRBArnett. May 4, 2013. Using “separators and labels” in Outwit Hub pro – open notes. NB Separator and labels are only available to users of Outwit Hub Pro – similar and probably better results can be achieved if you use regex (regular expressions). So I would try that out if you have a lot of time prior to covering an event. But if you are like I am (with limited regex knowledge) and wanting to get this information quickly, separator and labels are incredibly useful. That’...
