You work in a life-sucking job because it's a status symbol, ego booster and you get money to buy things to show you're in that strata of status (the bag, the clothes, the house, the car, the yacht). During my stay in SF one of my friends taunted me with a freshly baked and filled vanilla cream puff knowing that I couldn't partake in the delicious joy because I gave it up for lent.
