The Heysen Trail

After a hike up St Mary's Peak in Wilpena Pound (Flinders Ranges, South Australia) in June 05, I was inspired to join a hiking club. In April 06, I joined Friends of the Heysen Trail, and in May I took up the challenge of walking the 1200km Heysen Trail (South Australia), from Adelaide to Parachilna (Flinders Ranges). This is my story.

The Heysen Trail: Tugwell Road to Inman Valley

http://jez-heysen.blogspot.com/2006/09/end-to-end-3-tugwell-road-to-inman.html

Sunday, September 24, 2006. Tugwell Road to Inman Valley. However the weather varied throughout the day, with short bursts of light rain, or horizontal heavy rain, warm sun and cold wind. I don't have much else to write, my mind is too occupied with my holiday to Thailand in just 4 sleeps time? At 9/24/2006 08:37:00 PM. Hi Jerremy, Great eye for the photo compositions - again. Good to read abt the walk I missed. Hope the "patties" firm up by time I do a catch-up. Thanks for this. Map of Heysen Trail.

The Heysen Trail: The Heysen Trail - Complete

http://jez-heysen.blogspot.com/2008/08/heysen-trail-complete.html

Sunday, August 17, 2008. The Heysen Trail - Complete. Yesterday I finished the Heysen Trail at Parachilna Gorge - a journey of some 1,200km from Cape Jervis. 64 days of hiking over the past 2 years. Finished - August 16 2008 - at the end of the Heysen Trail at Parachilna Gorge. It seems a long time ago now, that fateful day when I started - April 30 2006. That morning was cold, I almost didn't bother getting up early. It didn't go unnoticed today of my first End-to-End 2 weekend back in mid May 2006.

The Heysen Trail: Exactly how long is the Heysen Trail?

http://jez-heysen.blogspot.com/2008/04/exactly-how-long-is-heysen-trail.html

Thursday, April 17, 2008. Exactly how long is the Heysen Trail? Estimates vary as to exactly how long the Heysen Trail actually is, although it is generally accepted that the trail is approximately 1,200km long. Is this really a good assumption to make though in calculating my percentage done and remaining? This blog entry is tediously boring if you don't care how long the trail is. Really, what is the difference between whether it is 1,110km long or 1,200km long? Published by the government Department f...

The Heysen Trail: Beyond the Heysen to Mt Hopeless

http://jez-heysen.blogspot.com/2011/04/beyond-heysen-to-mt-hopeless.html

Tuesday, April 12, 2011. Beyond the Heysen to Mt Hopeless. We've now completed our journey from Cape Jervis to Parachilna via the Heysen Trail, and the traverse of the Flinders Ranges from Crystal Brook to Mt Hopeless. You might think nothing more could lie in store on this Heysen theme, but there might just be an idea growing. No, we are certainly not continuing northwards from Mt Hopeless across those plains and deserts. Read full blog entries:. Graham, Nick, myself (Jeremy) and Simon. Finally, and aft...

The Heysen Trail: A Final Week on the Trail

http://jez-heysen.blogspot.com/2008/08/final-week-on-trail.html

Saturday, August 16, 2008. A Final Week on the Trail. To see the fullness of the trail there's no better way to experience the trail but with a pack and tent. 8 days: Red Range to Parachilna Gorge. Northern Guidebook, Maps 5.5-6.8. Spent the week out on the Heysen Trail, camping and hiking with Graham. We thought we might get away from the big group of End-to-End 2, make our own path for the week. We joined them on the final day's hike into Parachilna Gorge. Me and Graham at Aroona Hut. Mid week we staye...

The Mawson Trail: Mt Bryan East to Willalo Hall

http://jez-mawson.blogspot.com/2009/03/mt-bryan-east-to-willalo-hall.html

Tuesday, March 17, 2009. Mt Bryan East to Willalo Hall. Continuing north along the trail near Mt Bryan East, we encountered more of that Flinders-esque landscape we had seen last ride. The view from Dares Hill Summit was rewarding, we could see for miles, although I had no real idea of what we were looking at. We left some scrub and re-entered farmland dramatically crossing Goyders Line. Mt Bryan East to Willalo Hall. Had a look-in at the the childhood home of Antartic explorer, Sir Hubert Wilkins. This ...

Snorkelling on the Ningaloo Reef. Walking the Jatbula Trail. Walking the Larapinta Trail. The map above comes from the mid-1850s.

Tuesday, August 17, 2010. Farewell, and Hello. I'm sitting here watching the sun play over the surface of Uluru. A fitting end to my four month trip around WA and NT. Now I head south, back to Adelaide and home. Uluru - Kata Tjuta National Park, NT. Thanks for all your comments and emails along the way, I'm glad you've enjoyed reading my blog as much as I have writing it. So we will be doing parmmys at the Arms? The Mawson Trail: June 2009

http://jez-mawson.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html

Monday, June 1, 2009. A lonely isolated road. A lonely isolated road lead northwards away from the Old Wonoka ruins. Past the long forgotten graves with ornate cast iron fencing and a stone crypt. The road lay beside the former Great Northern Railway, which had once swept out to the north west to reach the plains. However, the road continued into the valley, that was covered in loose, red rocks, almost lunar-like. Melrose to Quorn to Kanyaka to Mt Little Station. Pulling down with it two of the massive g...

http://jez-magneticnorth.blogspot.com/2010/08/uluru-kata-tjuta-national-park.html

Tuesday, August 17, 2010. Uluru - Kata Tjuta National Park. It's an image every Australian has been overexposed to. Uluru. The Rock. I didn't have high expectations, but when I first saw it on the horizon, I was still left breathless. It really is awe insprining. Uluru - Kata Tjuta National Park, NT. The rock climb. I'd be interested to know, how many Australians who visit the park do the climb. Is it mostly internationals? Uluru or Ayers Rock? Uluru Base Walk map. Download Google Earth KML file. Google ...

Sunday, January 18, 2009. This was our first weekend away riding the Mawson Trail and we were introduced to the Rattler Trail. Rough, very rough. Saturday 17 January - Sunday 18 January, 2009. The Mawson Trail: April 2009

http://jez-mawson.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html

Friday, April 17, 2009. Stone Hut to Melrose. A mere 52km to Melrose. Lunch at the North Star. A quick ride back to Stone Hut along the bitumen. Brrttthp. Stone Hut to Melrose, return along bitumen road. Ah yeah, so had another Leave-Without-Pay-Day courtesy of the recession, so Graham and I decided to make the most of it and ride another day on the Mawson Trail. We would be up this way anyway for the weekend, hiking 63km along the Heysen Trail. Download Google Earth KML file. Melrose to near Stone Hut (...

Magnetic North: An abrupt end at Ellery Creek

http://jez-magneticnorth.blogspot.com/2010/08/abrupt-end-at-ellery-creek.html

Sunday, August 15, 2010. An abrupt end at Ellery Creek. Like I said, my hike of the Larapinta Trail ( see earlier blog post. Came to rather an abrupt end midway along it, at Ellery Creek. I'm at pains to describe exactly what happened, but one moment I was excitingly opening my food drop package, and moments later it seemed to game over. Magnetic North: July 2010

http://jez-magneticnorth.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html

Wednesday, July 28, 2010. Nitmiluk National Park (Katherine Gorge). Nitmiluk National Park (Katherine Gorge), Northern Territory. Maybe not horribly wrong. I could have done all the walking in two, not three, days, but I wanted to give my ever-injured feet a break, and to enjoy each of the spectacularly placed campsites on the Katherine River. On the second day, I returned along some of the main track, but this time deviating into Jawoyn Valley. The indig rock art was hard to find, I suspect I found ...

Magnetic North: March 2010

http://jez-magneticnorth.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

Sunday, March 21, 2010. As a newcomer to 4WDs I thought I might undertake a training course to familiarise myself with my capabilites and my car's capablities. 4WD Training Day near Lyndoch, Adventure 4WD. Introducing Pajero on the "Oh Shit Hill" (this vid of my brother):. You can see why it is called the "Oh Shit Hill" (vid of Pat). The oh shit comes when diagonally opposite wheels have lost traction and gravity pulls the car along:. And back up again (again Daniel):. The training by Adventure 4WD.
