Judith I Bridgland: June 2015
http://jibridgland.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html
Life in the Studio and Beyond - Notes from a Scottish Artist. Tuesday, 30 June 2015. What This Hand Has Done Today. So what's this chubby hand been sculpting today? Opinions range from seed pods. Depending on which angel you look at it from. I'm a great believer in letting the object become itself, and not being too prescriptive. It will tell you what it wants to be. It's just I'm not sure even it knows what it wants to be yet. Monday, 29 June 2015. Sculpture Workshop Day One. I liked the organic, coral-...

Judith I Bridgland: May 2015

Life in the Studio and Beyond - Notes from a Scottish Artist. Sunday, 31 May 2015. Very often, you get the sense that galleries put on exhibitions of Impressionist painters merely as a way of selling a lot of fridge magnets in the gift shop. So it is rare to come across an exhibition so thoughtful, thought-provoking and comprehensive as Inventing Impressionism. At the National Gallery in London. Here he is, painted in 1910 by Renoir. The exhibition opens with a recreation of Durand-Ruel's Parisian sittin...

Judith I Bridgland: Lily Ponds, Edinburgh

Life in the Studio and Beyond - Notes from a Scottish Artist. Friday, 10 July 2015. Lily Ponds, Edinburgh. Out again to take some more photos for work for my solo show next year in London. I've been to the glasshouses in the Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh to look at the theme of lilies. I like the geometric reflections of the panes of glass in amongst the organic shapes of the water plants. They have a giant amazonian lily flowering at the moment, with huge lily pads with cabbage-red edges.

Judith I Bridgland: April 2015
http://jibridgland.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Life in the Studio and Beyond - Notes from a Scottish Artist. Thursday, 30 April 2015. Taking Photos on the Yorkshire Coast. I was out over the Easter holidays to the coast of Yorkshire on a field trip to take photos for a series of new paintings. I started off at Spurn Point near Hull, and worked my way up to Whitby. Suffice to say, it got rather more scenic the further north I went! Here's the lighthouse at Spurn Point. Honestly, there is a lighthouse there, in the distance. This is Flamborough Head.

Judith I Bridgland: December 2014
http://jibridgland.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Life in the Studio and Beyond - Notes from a Scottish Artist. Friday, 19 December 2014. Rembrandt: The Late Works. Artists don't retire. In fact, the best artists achieve the culmination of a lifetime of experimentation and innovation by producing their best works in their final years. This is the premise of the latest blockbuster show at the National Gallery in London, Rembrandt: The Late Works. First up in 'Self-Scrutiny'. Rembrandt was, of course, famously a master of his own likeness. He didn't f...

Judith I Bridgland: Final Day
http://jibridgland.blogspot.com/2015/07/final-day.html
Life in the Studio and Beyond - Notes from a Scottish Artist. Friday, 3 July 2015. Yes, it's already Friday, and all our sculptures have to be finished today. I am still adding areas of plaster to make the form less figurative and more abstract, and painting the inside with acrylic to give a pinky glow like the edge of an abalone shell. Here's how everyone else did. My sculpture on the left, Ewan's world with minitaure sculptures of marble and aluminium inside, and Victoria's sculpture of Marco in clay.

Judith I Bridgland: Sculpture Day 3
http://jibridgland.blogspot.com/2015/07/sculpture-day-3.html
Life in the Studio and Beyond - Notes from a Scottish Artist. Wednesday, 1 July 2015. It's funny that I made so much progress in a very short time on Monday, then today my sculpture seems to have not changed very much at all, despite having spent another whole day working on it. I'm trying not to anthropomorphise it, but it does rather look like two funny little figures clinging on to each other in a strange dance. It's not what I started out to do at all. Here's a close-up of the surface. I'm an artist ...
