Over 40 different species of fish live in the lake, including 16 species of native cichlids that constitute 58% of the lake’s biomass. Pirates and rogue soldiers, also known as filibusters and freebooters, found enjoyment from plundering the local lakeside communities. Since Lake Nicaragua is connected to the Caribbean Sea by the San Juan River.
