Random thoughts on life, the universe and everything. Friday, 15 August 2014. SWIG, Python and opaque structs. One of my open source projects is python-gphoto2. A Python interface to the popular libgphoto2. Digital camera software library. It uses SWIG. Simplified Wrapper and Interface Generator) to generate the Python bindings from the library's "header files", saving me the trouble of hand crafting a Python interface to every C function in the library. Typedef struct Foo Foo; int foo new(Foo * obj); in...

http://jim-jotting.blogspot.com/2008_01_01_archive.html
Random thoughts on life, the universe and everything. Tuesday, 15 January 2008. Test card on BBCi. For some time I've been aware that my TV's setup is drifting slightly, and I'm losing more picture off the bottom of the screen than I would like. Borrowing a test pattern generator is a bit of a hassle, so I've not got around to sorting it out. Now someone's revealed how to get a test card via BBCi on DTT. Thursday, 10 January 2008. Random thoughts on life, the universe and everything. Tuesday, 7 October 2008. I've recently discovered the Google Image Labeller. Or Labeler as they call it) and am slightly hooked. However, I remain to be convinced that it's of any use at all. It appears to be an attempt to improve image searching by " crowdsourcing. Wednesday, 1 October 2008. Happy birthday, NASA. According to today's edition. Of the always interesting Astronomy Picture of the Day. I hope the next 50 years are as exciting as the first.

Random thoughts on life, the universe and everything. Tuesday, 15 October 2013. Connecting a Topfield PVR to a Raspberry Pi. I have a Topfield 5800 PVR (personal video recorder). Connecting this USB socket to my Raspberry Pi bare bones computer (that's on all the time) allows me to do a few useful things:. Download up to 2 weeks of EPG data to supplement the 1 week that's broadcast over the air. Jim@firefly $ gre...

http://jim-jotting.blogspot.com/2008_02_01_archive.html
Random thoughts on life, the universe and everything. Wednesday, 27 February 2008. Is my job safe? I've been mulling over an article from the Sunday Times. For more than a week now, and I still don't know what to make of it. It's a report of an interview with Zarin Patel, the BBC's director of finance, which says:. Wednesday, 13 February 2008. Back on the bike. Earlier this week I received my car's VED reminder, which prompted me to think "shouldn't I have had an MOT done by now? Normally I receive a let...

Jim's Jottings: September 2008
http://jim-jotting.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html
Random thoughts on life, the universe and everything. Monday, 29 September 2008. In a discussion with my manager today I described a tendency I have to approach any new area of work by finding something in it that's close to my previous work. Not only had my manager already noticed this problem, he'd given it a name - the Slartibartfast syndrome. It's nice to work for someone who has the same cultural references. Thursday, 18 September 2008. Nothing to see here, move along please. I could even bore you a...

Jim's Jottings: April 2008
http://jim-jotting.blogspot.com/2008_04_01_archive.html
Random thoughts on life, the universe and everything. Friday, 11 April 2008. I think I might be addicted to the facebook. I've only been playing since February this year, but have become completely hooked. I'd even go so far as to say it's the one thing that makes facebook worth bothering with. Like many others, my first thought on seeing Scrabulous was "how are they getting away with it? Recently, Mattel has launched an official SCRABBLE. Then I played my first word. Aaaaargh! Last but not least it's a ...

http://jim-jotting.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html
Random thoughts on life, the universe and everything. Tuesday, 21 April 2009. What I did on my holiday, part 3. Our hotel was almost deserted on Monday morning, in stark contrast to the previous day. We checked out nice and early and went into Bouillon for a bit of shopping. The only supermarket in town is a branch of colruyt. Just before lunch time. Returning to the brewery we did the self-guided tour. As on my previous visit more than ten years ago, and when we arrived that morning, there was a sch...

Jim's Jottings: My first Raspberry Pi - day 4
http://jim-jotting.blogspot.com/2013/10/my-first-raspberry-pi-day-4.html
Random thoughts on life, the universe and everything. Friday, 11 October 2013. My first Raspberry Pi - day 4. Add normal user account. On other computers in my home network I have the user name "jim". For convenient logging into the Pi it's useful to have an account with the same name. This is easily created as follows (when logged in as root):. Adduser jim mkdir /home/jim/.ssh chmod go-rx /home/jim/.ssh cp /home/pi/.ssh/authorized keys /home/jim/.ssh chown -R jim:jim /home/jim/.ssh. After editing the co...
