Targeting biomolecules

We are designing luminescent metal complexes and small molecules to target biomolecules and specific structures within cells. These compounds can be used as structural probes for a range of state-of-the-art microscopy techniques, including confocal microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. By careful selection of the chemical and physical properties of the compounds, we are also producing new therapeutic leads. Nuclear DNA of living cells stained red. Self-assembly

We are looking at self-assembly using electrochemically and photochemically active ruthenium(II) building blocks. We do this by either self-assembling kinetically inert metal building blocks or using relatively labile ruthenium(II) centres as the assembler. The final multinuclear assemblies are being targeted as sensors for ions, molecules, and biomolecules, or can function as new paradigms for molecular devices. A self-assembled Ru 2.
