The Berkley Blog

News, commentary, and a good measure of opinion by Presbyterian minister James D. Berkley. Monday, October 31, 2011. Trust No Covenant Network Bearing "Gifts". Is a word that often comes to mind when I read a statement from the Covenant Network (CN). In a suave and clever manner, CN unctuously implies one thing while actually saying another. The October 28 statement by the Covenant Network board. Provides a telling example. This would be a case of an Authoritative Interpretation making absurd what is alr...

The Berkley Blog: We Are Not Amused with Arrogated Power

http://jimberkley.blogspot.com/2008/10/we-are-not-amused-with-arrogated-power.html

News, commentary, and a good measure of opinion by Presbyterian minister James D. Berkley. Wednesday, October 22, 2008. We Are Not Amused with Arrogated Power. Wait one minute, Mr. Tulsa Attorney. Now threatening the Kirk of the Hills property settlement! The property agreement between the Presbytery of Eastern Oklahoma and Kirk of the Hills is none of your business. The Form of Government does not give the denomination the authority to approve a transfer of property. G-8.0301 states:. Has the responsibi...

The Berkley Blog: We Pay to Get Lobbied?

http://jimberkley.blogspot.com/2011/01/we-pay-to-get-lobbied.html

News, commentary, and a good measure of opinion by Presbyterian minister James D. Berkley. Thursday, January 27, 2011. We Pay to Get Lobbied? What’s the Washington Office up to these days? Is there major mission creep going on? However, a line from the article caught my attention: OPW is working to extend its work outside of Washington and into the greater church. What? So the office originally designed to lobby Congress is now going to lobby its funders instead? Let me get this straight. Although. The O...

The Berkley Blog: The Gospel in a Carol

http://jimberkley.blogspot.com/2008/12/gospel-in-carol.html

News, commentary, and a good measure of opinion by Presbyterian minister James D. Berkley. Monday, December 15, 2008. The Gospel in a Carol. The Christmas carol O Little Town of Bethlehem gives any congregation a simple and compelling way to tell the kernel of the evangelistic story. This carol, written by Phillips Brooks in 1868, is the Good News in a beloved song. Note the lyrics:. O little town of Bethlehem,. How still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep. The silent stars go by. This p...

The Berkley Blog: Ecclesiastical Isolationism

http://jimberkley.blogspot.com/2009/04/ecclestical-isolationism.html

News, commentary, and a good measure of opinion by Presbyterian minister James D. Berkley. Friday, April 03, 2009. I wonder if a form of church isolationism isn't taking place. When a country thinks it can be isolationist- all safe and protected by borders and the open seas- it soon learns that wars and oppression gain strength and end up on the attack. An isolationist country soon loses its isolation and becomes the focus of invasion. But oh the danger! However, I fear that the PGF. Reminds me of a colo...

The Berkley Blog: "No on B" Votes Increasingly Doom Passage

http://jimberkley.blogspot.com/2008/11/no-on-b-votes-increasingly-doom-passage.html

News, commentary, and a good measure of opinion by Presbyterian minister James D. Berkley. Saturday, November 22, 2008. No on B" Votes Increasingly Doom Passage. As of this writing, 9 of 173 presbyteries have voted on Amendment 08-B. All have voted no, most overwhelmingly. Each successive no vote makes the prospect of gaining approval of the moral revisionist amendment and thus approving nonmarital sexual practice for ordained Presbyterians all the more unlikely. Let’s do the math: The last time we voted...

the Adventures of Pastor Bill: June 2009

http://pastorbilladventure.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html

The Adventures of Pastor Bill. The (mis)adventures of a 30-something, city-born, Jesus-loving Presbyterian pastor in rural America just trying to figure out what it is, exactly, that he does here. Monday, June 8, 2009. The Spirit and Baptism. While I was pleased (at least doctrinally) with my sermon on Jesus' baptism yesterday, there was one exegetical point that really stood out to me that I was unable to capture. Let us all live in the new way, the way of Jesus Christ as revealed in sacred Scripture.

confluent thoughts: PRINCES AND PRIDE

http://confluentthoughts.blogspot.com/2009/12/princes-and-pride.html

Thursday, December 3, 2009. In my fascination with history as a young boy I began reading about little known things about European royalty in my spare time. One of the most intriguing stories I found was about two princes who lived in the 1400s. On June 22, 1483, a statement on behalf of Lord Protector Richard was issued and read all over England declaring that Edward IV's marriage to Elizabeth Woodville was illegitimate and that, in consequence, Richard, not his nephew, was the rightful king. Contrary t...

As I am now in the Christmas spirit, I thought I would try to make a list of things that I view as good and exciting. Without further ado, 8 things I support:. 2 Enjoying my job.

What God is Saying: Back from Some Sabbath Time

http://northwestspirituality.blogspot.com/2009/07/back-from-some-sabbath-time.html

What God is Saying. Spirituality that starts with the biblical text and connects with people in the real world. Tuesday, July 7, 2009. Back from Some Sabbath Time. Kerry and I spent last week travel down the Smith River, up the Oregon Coast and visiting with our youngest son Micah and his new wife Stephanie. We walked the beach, swam in rivers, talked, prayed and read God's Word. It is good to be reminded that God is the one who does the work. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). What God is Saying: January 2008

http://northwestspirituality.blogspot.com/2008_01_01_archive.html

What God is Saying. Spirituality that starts with the biblical text and connects with people in the real world. Monday, January 28, 2008. God’s New Adventure. March 2 I begin serving the two congregations that make up the Parish of the Siskiyous. This is clearly God’s new adventure. I am discovering that this new time of change is an opportunity for all of us to examine our world and ride the wave of gospel innovation. We either keep our eyes set on him as he calls us out to walk on water or we sink.

Professor Wagstaff | Professing Ideas On Nearly Everything

March 29, 2018. Posted by Jim Berkin in Baseball. 8217;tis Spring, and this old fart’s thoughts turn to… baseball. Opening day is finally here, there’s a slate of games on the dish, although they’re saving the Yankees/Bluejays matchup for a Friday night on MLB instead of today. Meh. After pleasantly surprising me last year and achieving the amazing run that brought them to within 1 game of making the World Series for the first time since 2009, the Yankees seem poised for a similar run this year. Making p...
