Cougar Notes

Thursday, August 13, 2015. Back in the Saddle Again! First Week of School:. Things are back as they should be at GCMS this week as our students have returned from summer break. Our student population is on the rise this year as we have topped the 1,000 student mark this year. This is up from about 970 last school year. We have had a great first week of school, and I have seen lots of smiling faces of students and staff. I appreciate your efforts in getting things off to such a great start! Dress codes ar...

Cougar Notes: October 2014

http://www.jimblain.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Thursday, October 30, 2014. Red Ribbon Week has gone well this week! Everyone seemed to love the Remix Education Assembly on Monday, and the students and staff really enjoy the dress up days that culminate with a costume contest on Friday. For middle school students, saying no to drugs is one of the most important lessons they can learn. As we wrap the week up and head into a long weekend, I have just a few notes to share. Good Luck GCHS Band! The band will be competing at State on Saturday! We look forw...

Cougar Notes: Suicide Prevention Training for Certified Staff

http://www.jimblain.blogspot.com/2015/07/suicide-prevention-training-for.html

Thursday, July 2, 2015. Suicide Prevention Training for Certified Staff. Just go to www.sptsuniversity.org. As you all know, we lost an 8. Grade student to an apparent suicide last school year. I don’t know if there is anything that anyone at GCMS could have said or done to have prevented this tragedy, but it was a scary reminder that suicide can and does happen everywhere. I appreciate the care you take in watching over our students. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile.

May 19, 2017. No, not a lesson in CyberSecurity. Just a tale. I was working on setting secure shell (SSH) access to a remote computer from mine. I’ve installed Linux on it and have enabled SSH access via RSA keys only. That’s the only real way of doing it properly. Only allow users to come in (disallowing the root user) via SSH as long as they have the 4096bit RSA key locally on their computer that’s registered with the remote computer. In order to determine if anyone had tried to get in I SSH’d in...

Jim Blair Engraving

Monday, May 2, 2016. Engraving of a Custom Ruger #1. At the Dallas Safari Club (Dallas, Texas) show and convention in 2015 my friend and client Mr. Jacob found a custom Ruger #1 at the Griffin and Howe booth. We discussed the possibility of engraving this rifle. It was decided that this rifle would be a good candidate for a project especially since it had better than factory stocks and metal upgrades. Upon taking the rifle apart I found the James Tucker (Medford, Oregon) had stamped the inside of the for...
