Tuesday, January 7, 2014. There are many adjectives that describe Bobby Gordon's clarinet sound…lyrical, haunting, delicate, passionate, impressionistic, poetic are some that immediately come to mind. Bobby's playing included all of those elements, even in a single performance. Before joining Jim Cullum, Bobby played with many greats, including Muggsy Spanier, Eddie Condon, George Brunies, Wild Bill Davison, Bobby Hackett, Zutty Singleton and others. The versions he ever heard. That statement should ...

Sunday, September 1, 2013. This Rhythm Section Will Not Be Repeated! 8211; by Hal Smith. Between 1937 and 1941, the great Jazz vibraphonist Lionel Hampton was featured on 23 sessions for the Bluebird label. Though he played drums or piano on a few sides, the majority of the recordings feature his exuberant vibes playing. Wednesday, September 29, 2010. The first recordings of Jazz giants Louis Armstrong, Jack Teagarden and Bix Beiderbecke never cease to amaze me, no matter how many times I listen to those historic sides. Though subsequent recordings would showcase his virtuosity on cornet, trumpet and vocals, Armstrong's first record (" Chimes Blues. With King Oliver from 4/15/23) shows that his playing style was almost fully formed at the age of 21. Similarly, Teagarden's solo chorus on " She's a Great, Great Girl. From ...

Thursday, July 8, 2010. What is Funny, Anyway? In 1956, I was 17. I made my first trip to New York that year. Jazz was seriously on. Teagarden at the Round Table, Gene Krupa at the Metropole, Red Allen was there too in another band. I went to Jimmy Ryan’s every night for there the great Wilbur de Paris band was at its zenith. And what a band it was. All these things will be chased around in future blogs. I went there and saw a different Fields film every day. This movie is for me! Recently, my wife, Tina...
