The Oakland Press Blogs: Eye of the Hawk: July 2008

http://jimhawkinsop.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html

Place A Classified Ad. Eye of the Hawk. Sunday, July 27, 2008. Why the Tigers keep playing Sheffield. There are 20 million reasons why Gary Sheffield is still in the Tigers’ lineup most nights while either rookie Matt Joyce or Marcus Thames sits. It is Baseball Economics 101. Yes, through Sunday, Sheffield was batting a meager .218, 78 points below his career average, with eight home runs and 26 RBI through 65 games. Meanwhile, Joyce, the rookie, had a .275, average, 10 HRs and 25 RBI in just 40 games.

The Oakland Press Blogs: Eye of the Hawk: Damon will be on Hall of Fame ballot someday. How many other Tigers can make that claim?

http://jimhawkinsop.blogspot.com/2010/09/damon-will-be-on-hall-of-fame-ballot.html

Place A Classified Ad. Eye of the Hawk. Thursday, September 16, 2010. Damon will be on Hall of Fame ballot someday. How many other Tigers can make that claim? Johnny Damon probably wont wear a Tigers uniform next season. But he plans to play somewhere. And his name will definitely be on the Hall of Fame ballot someday in the not-too-distant future. How many of his current Tiger teammates can make that same claim? All too often, I fear, Damons performance and presence have been under-appreciated this year.

The Red Wings are in the Stanley Cup finals. The Tigers are in last place in the American League Central. 147;I’d say, right now, coach (Mike) Babcock is doing a pretty good job of saving our butts over here,” Jim Leyland quipped when asked what he thought Ilitch’s current view might be of his two big league sports teams. The Oakland Press Blogs: Eye of the Hawk: September 2008

http://jimhawkinsop.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html

Place A Classified Ad. Eye of the Hawk. Monday, September 29, 2008. Tigers fans deserve standing ovation. A friend called today to ask if I am happy that the Tigers’ season is finally over. I told him my emotions are mixed. Part of me certainly is happy because I am tired of writing about losing. However, part of me still can’t believe this season unfolded the way it did. I saw it. I lived it. But I can’t believe it. And I can’t explain it. Nobody can. Jim Leyland was so moved he teared up in his office ...

http://jimhawkinsop.blogspot.com/2010/09/guillen-doesnt-care-where-he-plays-next.html

Place A Classified Ad. Eye of the Hawk. Sunday, September 12, 2010. Guillen doesn't care where he plays next year, he just wants to stay healthy. Carlos Guillen said Sunday he doesnt care whether he plays second base or serves as the Tigers DH next season. He just wants to play. I enjoy playing baseball - it doesnt matter where, declared Guillen. Id be OK playing second, DH-ing, any position. I just want to stay healthy. They wont know until they get in there and clean it out, Guillen explained. What was...

July 15, 2015. Not the Barbra Streisand kind, the kind that plague us all our lives. I’ve been reading a mystery novel by John Dickson Carr called. The Dead Man’s Knock. Which is set at a fictitious college near Washington, DC, in 1948. It prompted me to wonder what has happened at my own Alma Mater, Capital University in Columbus, Ohio. I wondered, do they still teach science there? So I went looking; and, indeed, they do still teach science. But not. Branch of science, Geology; at least, not as a major.

The Oakland Press Blogs: Eye of the Hawk

Place A Classified Ad. Eye of the Hawk. Thursday, September 30, 2010. Prediction: Third-place finish, sprained ankle will cost Cabrera MVP he deserves. The vote will be close. Probably the closest since 2006 when Justin Morneau edged Derek Jeter by 14 points. But I think the Tigers disappointing third-place finish and the sprained ankle that knocked Miguel Cabrera out of the lineup for the final week of the season will cost Cabrera the Most Valuable Player Award that he so obviously deserves. But in the ...

Mystic Conversations – Poems for meditation and contemplation

The Place an original poem by Jim Hawks. December 31, 2017. Millions of years have passed. And I wait for you. I knew you when you were a stone. I watched you grow into the tree. I saw you as a fish swimming. And then as a bird flying. Now you are you. Do you remember me. I am the womb. I am the seer, the sun. The stars, the sky, the universe. Come to me and be as a child again. Play in clouds of fragrant flowers. Everything here is new. This is the place between thoughts where it is silent.
