On last evening’s walk with the hiking club (my first after the 40 miler) to stretch out the stiff muscles, I talked with a few members about Jean Henry, the 81-year old who completed the 20-, 26- and 40-mile hikes. And, everyone member said the same thing: “She has guts! One member even said that Jean is his hero because of the example she has set for everyone else. Through perseverance, determination and training, here I was in Hinckley Lake at Sunday morning at 4 with 35 other lunatics. Getting up at 2:30am with only 4 hrs of sleep, after having breakfast, I gathered my water, Clif bars, dried fruit and left for the unknown. Usually, for a nice spring evening hike, at least two dozen hikers would attend. But, not this evening. But, not this evening. There was so much water, the road was closed at Cedar Point Road. Riding the spiral of life. Saturday, April 23, 2011. On Completing the Cleveland Hiking Club 20 miler. Hiking the 20 miler is not liking running in a race on a flat surface. It includes hills, trails, uneven surfaces, climbing and ducking. This was my first attempt at this course. I finished it in 6 hrs, 7 minutes, middle of the pack. Not bad for my first time. There are four things I learned: Fortitude. Fortitude – having the courage to finish in the face of odds. Faith – believing in yourself.
