Jim Leff's Slog: Protagonists
http://jimleff.blogspot.com/2015/07/protagonists.html
Unorthodox Perspectives and Surreal Anecdotes. Wednesday, July 8, 2015. Maturity is the correction of the misconception that you're the protagonist in this drama. You're not. You've never been. You're a character actor, briefly adding your bit of unique color to the action. The evidence which accumulates to prove this only feels harrowing for those who insist on clinging to the misconception. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). A Bite of China. Pluto and The Slog. Jim Leff's Slog: August 2015
http://jimleff.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html
Unorthodox Perspectives and Surreal Anecdotes. Tuesday, August 25, 2015. Trump, Escalation, and a Taoist View of Political Extremism. So I've been sitting here listening to Donald Trump say more vile things about Hispanic people. His latest truthy newsflash is that there've recently been a couple of high-profile rapes allegedly perpetrated by our 12 million Mexican immigrants. See? He told you they were mostly rapists! Africans to an entirely distinct degree, no doubt. But I once observed. That "just bec...
Jim Leff's Slog: May 2015
http://jimleff.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
Unorthodox Perspectives and Surreal Anecdotes. Sunday, May 31, 2015. Again and again, I notice that marriages (and other long relationships) are very frequently the opposite of how they appear. The hapless, loopier-seeming one is usually the rock. The stoic, competent-seeming one is usually the anguished basket case. The quiet, gentler one is usually the dominator. Sunday, May 24, 2015. Going Narrow to Go Broad. Terror. Terror of doing something no one else in this town has ever done. Terror of t...I can...
Jim Leff's Slog: Bubbles, Slogs, and Selling Out: Part 1
http://jimleff.blogspot.com/2008/12/chowhound-story.html
Unorthodox Perspectives and Surreal Anecdotes. Monday, December 15, 2008. Bubbles, Slogs, and Selling Out: Part 1. Today my agreement with CNET Networks has expired. The contract barred me from competing with them or "disparaging" them (how's that for a broad term? Poised to eventually swap in for our home page. And I, mortally strapped for cash, applied for a job working the counter at a computer store owned by an old friend. The application was rejected. Then, two weeks later, I got an email out of the...

They inevitably ask for "feedback" from the community. after. The changes are a fait accompli. It always strikes me like this:. So how do you like it? You like it, right? Run Google Tasks on Your Menu Bar
http://www.suberapps.com/tips-and-tricks/run-google-tasks-on-your-menu-bar
February 4th, 2009. Run Google Tasks on Your Menu Bar. As you might already know, Google recently gave GTD fans some lovin’ by optimizing Google’s “Tasks” for iPhone and Android. ( read more. From Google’s Blog). Wouldn’t it be nice if you can also run Google Tasks on your Mac as a menu bar item with the same sleek interface you see on the iPhone or Android? If you had read my previous post on the “Fluid” app. 1) Download Fluid app. 2) Install and launch Fluid. Type any name you want in the Name field.

The Selected Ballads: Heard and Seen - Projectors, Shipp on Farfisa, Konitz, Ornette on Film
http://theselectedballads.blogspot.com/2012/09/heard-and-seen-projectors-shipp-on.html
Sunday, September 2, 2012. Heard and Seen - Projectors, Shipp on Farfisa, Konitz, Ornette on Film. Dirty Projectors - Swing Lo Magellan. The new DPs album has grown on me after some initial disappointment. Though I've found much to like, I still have a hard time seeing it as a step forward from its predecessor, Bitte Orca. An album that sounded like a sustained, cohesive statement of a new direction without obvious predecessors. Swing Lo. Isn't a Nashville Skyline. Lee Konitz - Satori. The lineup is pret...

The Selected Ballads: Masabumi Kikuchi / Ornette Coleman
http://theselectedballads.blogspot.com/2015/07/masabumi-kikuchi-ornette-coleman.html
Wednesday, July 8, 2015. Masabumi Kikuchi / Ornette Coleman. I was saddened to hear of the passing of Masabumi Kikuchi this week. Seeing him on piano at the Village Vanguard with Paul Motian truly expanded my conception of music and beauty. I put down some impressions of one such appearance here. In my negligence in updating this blog, I let the passing of Ornette Coleman go unmentioned here. Here are some earlier pieces touching on the now-departed master/magus/maverick - an early effort. An und für sich.

The Selected Ballads: March 2015
http://theselectedballads.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Sunday, March 15, 2015. Listening to Early Fusion. After mostly ignoring the genre for years, I’ve recently, and I suppose belatedly, been getting into fusion. For decades now, fusion has been kind of a joke or a dirty word to a lot of jazz and. Well, maybe we can at least co-credit Tony Williams and John McLaughlin. On the fusion timeline, the 1969 sessions for In A Silent Way. Preceded those for Emergency! Is a very fine album, much more jazz than rock, with a real collaborative feeling - McLaughlin...

The Selected Ballads: Peter Evans at JACK
http://theselectedballads.blogspot.com/2014/09/peter-evans-at-jack.html
Sunday, September 28, 2014. Peter Evans at JACK. A set from Evans' current quintet followed and was equally remarkable on its own terms. With Jim Black's powerful drumming and Sam Pluta live-processing the sounds of the various instruments, this is a heavy band. One rather audacious and unsettling moment toward the end of the set: Evans was playing something that sounded a bit like sobbing (animal cries in the night? I haven't listened enough to comment on the nuances that this project needs to be judged...

If This Were Easy…. 8212; Easy @ 3:40 pm. So having talked to 5 new gyms, I’ve narrowed it down to 2 choices. The first is the Columbus Center at Lawrence and Dufferin. The second is the University City Recreation Center at Finch and Sentinel, also known as the ghetto gym. Will cancel for a move w/ 30 days notice. Monthly, quarterly, semi and annual memberships. Towel service either $1 per towel or bumping up to $85 membership which doesn’t offer much else I care about. Personal training $55-65 / session.
