My experience as an artist started with Japanese calligraphy several years ago in East Lansing, Michigan. I had the opportunity to study under Mike Alexanian, a highly recognized calligrapher with strong Japanese connections who had mastered calligraphy, the sword and Tai Kwon Do. He taught the use of the brush and ink but also taught Japanese history, poetry, music and culture. He stressed how all of these were interconnected and how each helped create the other. Credit the Germans. Expression could determine form and it would still be art. When I worked with Pam Schader in California we spent much time viewing and studying the expressionists, the Germans, their style and what they did to make something new. Pam explained that expressionism still required form, but just how much form was determined by the artist. My expressionist efforts show this progression. Christ on the Cross. Black Moon Over Oasis.
