안녕 나는 조금 먼 서울에 있어. 여름 풍경, 2016. 그 봄이 벌써 1년 전. 다른 도시의 겨울에서나 겪던 칼날 같은 바람이 이 지역에 분 까닭이다. 떨어진 줄 알았던 감기가 여전히 폐에 붙어 있는지 기침이 나 곤욕스럽다. 약을 먹어도 듣질 않아 며칠 전까지는 잠만 내리 잤다. 목구멍에 탱자 나무가 있나 싶게 아파서 약에다 신경질을 부리기도 했고. 지금 먹는 약은 또 다른 약인데,. 이것도 효과가 그리 크지 않은 것 보면 이번 감기가 그런 것이려니. 아니면 내성이 생긴 거려나. 약을 얼마나 먹었다고 내성이라니! 하기에는 나도 그저 그런 한국인이라. 수두룩빽빽 색색깔 감기약들이 주마등처럼 지나간다. 9월 25일 금요일, 맑음. 그는 실체 없이 항상 내 곁에 있는 사람이 됐다. 추석 연휴를 앞두고 가족들이 모여든다. 보고 싶다는 말은 부질없고 그리움은 하염없다. 또 그 사이 갇힌 구름 낀 하늘을 한 하루. 그저께 가로수로 심긴 은행의 노란잎을 보며 당황했다. 나를 데려가던 계절이 서먹하기만했다.

안녕 나는 조금 먼 서울에 있어. 구식 머리를 매끈하게 기름칠하고 다니는 아저씨였다. 이름을 묻고 피를 뽑아간다. 그게 그의 일이고 이전 모두 같은 식이었다. 그런데 그날, 아빠가 가장 약했던 날. 재규어의 눈에 먹잇감이 보이듯 6인실 안에서 최약체인 아빠를 알아본 것일까. 그는 평소와 달리 살갑게 말을 붙였다. 나는 손톱을 떼내는 기분을 느끼며 몇 번이고 대답해주었다. 나의 나이를 짐작해 보는 모습따위는 대수롭잖았다. 병실 바닥으로 내려앉아 내 발목을 휘감던 끔찍한 느낌. 오물의 냄새를 한 손. 자신도 전도사라며, 힘들 때 교회를 찾아 좋아졌다고 했다. 아빠를 위해 기도하겠답시고 아빠의 손을 잡았다. 계란팔이 확성기 소리처럼 상투적인 말이 지나갔다. 그가 ‘아멘'했고 아빠에게도 '아멘’ 하라고 했다. 아빠의 꺼질듯한 소리가 '아멘’ 했다. 신따위 믿지 않던 아빠가 '아멘’ 했다. 찾지 않은 교회가 스스로 아빠에게 와 '아멘’ 하게 했다. 피를 뽑던 그가 우리에게서 더한 것을 갈취해갔다.
