June 11, 2014. Great Story and Photos for ALL Hat Aficionado’s. Rewired and Retired in Nicaragua. Panama hats, woven from the straw of the toquilla plant, are from Ecuador! In Ecuador they don’t call them Panamas. They call them sombreros de paja toquilla. The origin of this misnomer comes from the hat’s widespread use by the workers who built the Panama Canal from 1904-1914. Once the basic hat is woven, the process takes about an hour, cutting, inserting a headband, pressing, and gluing. You are comment...

Motmots and Tutarones, a bit of Panama Wildlife. February 23, 2014. Panama Wildlife not exactly New York City BUT my type of Living. We see so many birds here! A frequent visitor and one of my favorites is the Blue-Crowned Motmot. They are a bit larger than most of the yard visitors, very quiet, and usually visit singly or in pairs. Like all the birds here, they love papayas. More freedom in Panama as a foreigner than in the U.S as a citizen? Sure feels that way. February 24, 2014 at 3:43 am. PanamaDaze&...

JK Mikals' Musings: June 2013
http://jkmikals.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html
From the author of "A Chip in Time,". Random Thoughts on Writing, Life, Death, Love, Travel, Culture and General Idiocy. Saturday, June 29, 2013. A calf on a leash is eating weeds just outside my backyard this morning. His owner is with him, walking him like a dog, as the calf slowly snacks up the road. That's a pretty busy road, so I'm pleased the owner has him on a lead. When I lived at the beach an entire herd regularly "escaped" and came strolling past hunting greens. Tuesday, June 25, 2013. I told h...

All (nearly 200 as of August 2014) went to the other site. So. if what you want to know includes. Mikals first pub...

JK Mikals' Musings: Transitory Hangovers - Butt a Cultural Tidbit
http://jkmikals.blogspot.com/2013/06/transitory-hangovers-butt-cultural.html
From the author of "A Chip in Time,". Random Thoughts on Writing, Life, Death, Love, Travel, Culture and General Idiocy. Wednesday, June 5, 2013. Transitory Hangovers - Butt a Cultural Tidbit. It is not solely my butt that hangs over the edge of the seats on Panamanian buses, but nearly everyone's. I usually try to grab a window seat, but I was late getting to the station for my trip to la Cuidad, and all that was left was an aisle perch. Then believe me, I shifted too. For the seats, I mean. However, th...

From the author of "A Chip in Time,". Random Thoughts on Writing, Life, Death, Love, Travel, Culture and General Idiocy. Sunday, October 6, 2013. My expat friends warned me, "If you see something you want, buy it. Don't wait, because it probably won't be there the next time you go.". Now some would say that I am just procrastinating. And some would say I have gotten seriously tight fisted. Others might congratulate me on my shopping skills. Some" might be right. Nothing there, either. Because the shelves...

JK Mikals' Musings: I Swallowed a Fly. P'raps I'll Die.

From the author of "A Chip in Time,". Random Thoughts on Writing, Life, Death, Love, Travel, Culture and General Idiocy. Monday, June 24, 2013. I Swallowed a Fly. P'raps I'll Die. It's fly season here in Panama. A truly local experience in many ways. The flies hatch about a month after the rains start. (The rains were late this year.). For 3 or 4 weeks there are flies everywhere, into everything. Screens, fly swatters, fly traps are no help. The long term expats are easy to spot by their casual attitudes.
