By Julian M Bucknall. Upgrading hardware: Dell XPS 15z and XPS 12. We’re getting close to the conference season at work: in June I’m going to both TechEd US in New Orleans. And / build/ in San Francisco. First things first, my current machine is a Dell XPS 15z and I’ve already been on the upgrade path with it ( one. I could work out which one is the recovery partition and delete and merge it, but to be honest, I can’t be bothered.). Oh, and I installed a Start Menu replacement. Sorry, I just can’t stand ...

In my blog post Thoughts on open source I ended cryptically with But be aware that just because they’re free doesn’t mean that the cost to use them is zero. Let me expand a little on this with especial regard to JavaScript libraries. What exactly is a cost associated with an open source library? When is it not free? Sun 14-Aug-2016 4:30 PM. Bye-bye, MacBook Pro; Hello, Dell XPS 15z : Algorithms for the masses - julian m bucknall
http://blog.boyet.com/blog/blog/bye-bye-macbook-pro-hello-dell-xps-15z
By Julian M Bucknall. Bye-bye, MacBook Pro; Hello, Dell XPS 15z. After some 8 months of really trying to use it as my main machine for everything I do, I’m converting my MacBook Pro back into a Mac OS X only machine. In replacement, I just received a Dell XPS 15z. Even this usage has now palled, and palled badly. The reason? For the most part, it’s the absolutely crappy drivers provided by Apple in Boot Camp. The MacBook Pros come with a nifty single jack port for headphones and mic. I’ve bough...Sorry, ...

Blog Archive By Category. Published: Thu, 16-Jun-2005 updated: Thu, 27-Oct-2005. For those who want to reread my pearls of wisdom, here's the archives of my previous blog entries arranged by category. Some posts will appear in several categories. At a later stage in the development of this website, I'll start putting the categories in the posts themselves. Note that this categorization is a work in progress (there are a lot of blog posts to tag), so please bear with me as I work through the backlog.

Tomes of Delphi: Algorithms and Data Structures. Published: Mon, 16-Jun-2003 updated: Sat, 6-Aug-2016. Published: Thu, 19-Jun-2003. It was a bit of a slog, taking 20 months elapsed time in all, and, to be brutally honest for all you budding authors out there, the money wasn't worth it. Don't get me wrong: the fame is great, it's just that the fortune is lacking. No two ways about it, and to pile even more ignominy onto it, the market for computer technical books is pretty grim too. A grand for my book?

Published: Tue, 12-Aug-2003 updated: Sat, 6-Aug-2016. One of the things I enjoy doing is writing, especially writing about algorithms and development methodologies. Well, several reasons I suppose. First is that the study of algorithms is based in mathematics, and that's the subject I got my BSc degree in at Kings College, University of London, way back in 1979. Third is that I just enjoy teasing out complex algorithms into efficient code. This website contains lots of articles on various subjects. Lates...

Published: Thu, 26-Jun-2008 updated: Sat, 16-Aug-2008. From the scary but true department: I've been recording a whole series of videos for DevExpress. Well, yes. You know how when you listen to yourself in a recording it sounds weird to you? It's getting better though, thank heavens. The more I do, the more I relax into it. Today's sessions were a little more difficult though: we started recording the ones where I introduce our new DXGrid for WPF beta. If you want a taste, check this one.

Pandora is costing me a pretty penny. Published: Mon, 11-Aug-2008 updated: Mon, 11-Aug-2008. Is an internet radio station with a difference. First of all it's free (which seems to negate my blog title). Second it creates a playlist at run-time based on the music you like. Worse than that, some of it I like so much, I end up buying the album. Hence the blog. Every time this happens, I'm spending another $10 at Amazon's MP3 store. Help! By Paul van Dyk.
