Clay is formed as a result of millions of years of rocks weathering, compressed by gravity, moved from their original location of formation by wind and water. It has no will of its own and will yield to whatever force that is applied to it. By itself, clay does not move. It does, however, record every force that is applied to it. This silent medium is like a mirror that reflects the maker. I believe in spirit. I like the analogy of human beings as onions, being peeled layer by layer. I study my mind.

Saturday, 14 September 2013. Well, it's here. With much help from my friend, Jon, who cut most of the bricks in to arch bricks,. We got the arch completed and pulled out the former. It was a nice feeling to see this. The iron work is holding nicely and hence the arch is staying up - I've put 4 inches of ceramic fibre as additional insulation. It looks good. We gave it a test spin, just because we could, really. Finally, here's a little video of us removing the arch former. Tuesday, 3 September 2013.

Thursday, 10 October 2013. Soda Kiln - first firing. It's fair to say I've had some issues with the new kiln. I did one bisque firing, which went well, then started a soda firing, but had to abandon it as the temperature wouldn't rise past about 1000 degrees. But also lots of positives to work on, and a few things to discard (crank clay, even tempered with porcelain, isn't my thing - all those spots! Tea pot with grolleg slip - not pretty but best lid I've ever made. Another vase with the Svend Bayer clay.

Monday, 25 February 2013. Pots from the mad wood kiln. So here are some pots from the little wood kiln we built on Saturday. They were better than I expected. There was a distinct two ends of the spectrum - where the flame came in to the chamber it had got hot, and then under the flu exit, the flame didn't hit the pots at all so there simply were under fired. Wednesday, 11 July 2012. New clay, please. I can sincerely say, since the last time I made a pot, I haven't made another one. And that time was at Nics - see previous post about the throwing large course. Anyway, haven't had time.
