How Parking Lots Can Enrich Your Life | The View From 80
https://viewfrom80.wordpress.com/2014/10/02/how-parking-lots-can-enrich-your-life
The View From 80. At last, perspective. How Parking Lots Can Enrich Your Life. How Parking Lots Can Enrich Your Life. Is a love of parking lots grounds for dismissal? When I realized one day that I could short circuit the search for a new car by wandering in a parking lot, a solution to the car replacement problem was at hand. Deep in the process I became fascinated by the relationship between parking lots and the buildings they served. Who are the people who own these cars? The local country club lot wi...
Cyberwar Goes Public | The View From 80
https://viewfrom80.wordpress.com/2015/01/02/cyberwar-goes-public
The View From 80. At last, perspective. North Korea has fired the first public shot in international Cyberwarfare. In 21. Century warfare, hackers are the soldiers, computers are the weapons and an angry dictator has pulled the trigger. Why, when hacking has been around for a few years, has Kim Jong Un’s fury at a small American movie caused such a stir? Don’t mess with that. The questions are big: today a movie, tomorrow, the electrical grid, our military or financial establishments? The President calle...

These Are American Patriots? | The View From 80
https://viewfrom80.wordpress.com/2014/12/14/these-are-american-patriots
The View From 80. At last, perspective. These Are American Patriots? In response to the attack, CIA created Black Op sites around the world where they could bring suspected collaborators for covert interrogation. CIA employees and the contractors they hired for more than $80,000,000 of taxpayer money, tortured the prisoners with rectal rehydration, rape, waterboarding, sleep deprivation, and hanging naked in handcuffs from pipes. The simplest way to describe the rage that has consumed the discussion is t...
Revisiting the Rosenbergs | The View From 80
https://viewfrom80.wordpress.com/2014/10/17/revisiting-the-rosenbergs
The View From 80. At last, perspective. A public outcry rooted in accusations of circumstantial evidence began to build in the public. Presidents Truman and Eisenhower each denied clemency and the country divided along partisan lines just as it has done today for other reasons. The Hiss and Rosenberg cases fueled the Cold War fear but the wave of disbelief grew apace until the country finally was riveted by the McCarthy hearings. And what were we thinking? October 17, 2014. My Love of Movies | The View From 80
https://viewfrom80.wordpress.com/2015/02/25/my-love-of-movies
The View From 80. At last, perspective. My Love of Movies. If you live long enough, the fun often lies in looking back at your personal timeline with a new eye. Why did I fall in love with movies? What led me, fifty years after my first movie to the great pleasure of reviewing them? And now, the trail seems very clear. In 1941, Helen Hurd, mother of my closest childhood friend Dickie, took the two of us to see. Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Best Movie: The Song of Bernadette. With two weeklies, the internet, a...
Kids Know What’s Important | The View From 80
https://viewfrom80.wordpress.com/2014/10/25/kids-know-whats-important
The View From 80. At last, perspective. Kids Know What’s Important. I took very good care of those Superman comic books, a special shelf for them alone. When I went away to college, they remained there, safely in my bedroom, but when I married at 19, my mother threw away all my childish things on her theory that anyone who was doing such a fine 1950s thing as getting married at 19, surely didn’t want comic books, an embarrassing symbol of childhood. Winter Memories | The View From 80
https://viewfrom80.wordpress.com/2015/01/29/winter-memories
The View From 80. At last, perspective. When a good friend asked, What do you do with the memories? I told her that I cry gently, though not for long, realizing how lucky I am that they are about love and loss rather than bad things, and added that the emotion is more about loss as I get older and I have to learn that loss isn’t bad, it’s just inevitable. Would the snow be too deep for the plow on my lightweight Jeep to move? Should I surrender and ask a professional to bail me out? January 29, 2015.
