. . . Appalachian Journal : March 2015
http://joansnaturejournal.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Living on a mountain in southwest Virginia. Thursday, March 26, 2015. Spring Beauty and Toothwort. Nothing says spring like the early spring wildflowers. I went up into the woods this morning to collect wood to start a fire I was delighted to see the first native wildflower:. From a distance, you would not see the Spring Beauty at all. The lance-shaped leaves and 5 petals are small. After a week, the woods should be covered with them and you still will not notice them until you look down. Coltsfoot is al...
. . . Appalachian Journal : June 2014
http://joansnaturejournal.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
Living on a mountain in southwest Virginia. Sunday, June 29, 2014. June Butterflies, Moth, and Frog UPDATED. June has consistently been in the 80s and sometimes in the 90s (far too early for that in the mountains! I emptied my rain barrel twice to water the garden so rain has definitely been less than needed. Today has been the first completely cloudy day so I am finally getting around to doing post. Two things seem to love this weather: fireflies and butterfly weed (or as I call it orange milkweed).
. . . Appalachian Journal : September 2013
http://joansnaturejournal.blogspot.com/2013_09_01_archive.html
Living on a mountain in southwest Virginia. Tuesday, September 17, 2013. We hiked the Cascades trail in Jefferson National Forest after Labor Day. It was one of the first sunny days we have had all summer. The 4-mile hike follows Little Stoney Creek. Waterfalls seemed to be more plentiful along the trail. Lobelia cardinalis September 3, 2013. I was thrilled to see the Cardinal Flower bloom right next to the creek. Ferns covered the rocks. Mosses were emerald green from the plentiful rain this summer.
. . . Appalachian Journal : Mill Creek Hike with Seventh Graders!
http://joansnaturejournal.blogspot.com/2015/06/mill-creek-hike-with-seventh-graders.html
Living on a mountain in southwest Virginia. Friday, June 12, 2015. Mill Creek Hike with Seventh Graders! Earlier this week, I and two other Virginia Master Naturalists along with Justine and Connor from the Virginia Outdoors Foundation led hikes for Narrows Middle School seventh graders in groups of two. In total, 58 students trekked about 1/2 mile along Mill Creek up to the reservoir. Students were excited to see two Eastern Box Turtles. We also spotted a deer and waited for him to cross the road. Ralph...

Living on a mountain in southwest Virginia. Sunday, April 26, 2015. Mayapples, Phlox, Bluebells and More. Spring always happens so quickly that before I know it, I haven't posed the half of it! This is just what I photographed on April 19:. The Large-Flowered Trillium was a little early, perhaps because this one was near the edge of our yard- not in the cove where most of them bloom on our land. The Mayapple is one of my favorites and are just starting to bloom in the last day or two. By Monday afternoon...

A Passion for Nature. Audubon Center and Sanctuary. Long Point State Park. July 17, 2015. Akeley Swamp: (Butterflies and) Wildflowers! Our first attempt to see butterflies at Akeley Swamp was a washout. We kinda knew it would be, which is why we didn’t bother with cameras. But the wildflowers were riotous and the potential was great, so we planned to return in a couple of days when the forecast was more promising. I was delighted by the cool temperatures and the opportunity to learn them. This St John...

It's my garden and one of my favorite place to be. I'm not a professional gardener, but I love trying new things and working on new ideas here in Central Virginia. Watch them grow with me! Saturday, April 10, 2010. Spring Came While I was Busy Working. In the past ten days things have changed in the garden. I hardly know the place. Planted these anemones - Anemene ciribarua 'Lord Lieutenant' last year and only two or fifteen came up, but they are both back this year and much bigger. There is hope. Last y...

My First Memory
Monday, March 26, 2007. Switzerland, circa 1947*. My First Memory, circa 1947. I think I was not yet two. In the tiny (neutral) country called. To which my parents escaped. Where I was born. From which we later. Were forced to leave. But then it was spring. Me so tiny, dark and so naked. Sitting bare bottom in a washtub. Of thin blue water. Under the impossibly high. Where my mother had left me. For just one minute alone. When the huge brindled cow. Arched nostrils came by. Drank up all my water.

Living on a mountain in southwest Virginia. Sunday, January 21, 2018. Today is warm (54 degrees) and cloudy. On my way to buy a Sunday paper (can't get it delivered anymore! I saw a pair of ducks on Walker Creek. I took this quick photo and tried to remember a few field marks (e.g. dark head, white body on one and rufous head with gray body on the other. I also saw a Great Blue Heron on the creek but he quickly flew away when I got out of the car. They moved up the driveway to another damp area. Laura Er...

Miami Beach Problems, and other stuff
Miami Beach Problems, and other stuff. Wednesday, February 25, 2015. In regards to the closing of Surfmed Pharmacy in Miami Beach. The trouble with this is that you can find popcorn, candy and Coke in thousands of other stores, but how about some stationary guys? Who run these stores, by the way? Probably some 21-year old high school graduate, not very well versed in office goods, who is glad to be called manager to impress girls and makes $ 8.23 an hour. Do I shop in these pharmacies? CVS and Walgreens,...
