Joanna Bourne: Talk to me
http://jobourne.blogspot.com/2015/06/talk-to-me.html
Tuesday, June 09, 2015. I was advising a young person I know about writing. I continue to be amazed that kids aren't taught grammar anymore, but that's a separate issue.). Anyway. Pretty good writing overall. So I come away thinking -. A writer needs to engage with the page as if it were a person. We need to hold a conversation with the page. We need to talk to the page. Posted by Jo Bourne. Kids arent taught grammar? Like, no more circling direct objects and drawing lines around and stuff? My speaking s...
Joanna Bourne: The Christmast Tree Says Goodbye
http://jobourne.blogspot.com/2015/01/the-christmast-tree-ssays-goodbye.html
Tuesday, January 06, 2015. The Christmast Tree Says Goodbye. Yesterday was Twelfth Night, the last of the traditional Twelve Days of Christmas. It's gone and taken with it the Twelve Drummers. Drumming, Eleven Pipers Piping and the rest of that leaping, dancing, twittering lot. If you went in for Twelfth Night festivities - the way my Regency folks probably did - you'd be sleeping off a surfeit the food and drink today. We've come to the feast of Epiphany. I've posted this over on WordWenches here. Subsc...
Joanna Bourne: Doin' It Your Way
http://jobourne.blogspot.com/2015/06/doin-it-your-way.html
Saturday, June 20, 2015. Doin' It Your Way. I wrote this elsewhere in response to somebody worrying they were not doing their plotting 'correctly'. I think they were worried about not using an outline maybe. So this is what I said:. Writing is more like a bar fight - not that I have been in a bar fight. You will doubtless have noticed that writers follow many paths to plotdom. These may or may not include cats. So take all the 'you have to's and use them to provide better drainage in the gully at the bot...
Joanna Bourne: Regency and the toothbrush
http://jobourne.blogspot.com/2015/05/regency-and-toothbrush.html
Friday, May 08, 2015. Regency and the toothbrush. In 1787, this painting made a sensation. She's Showing her Teeth. From time to time I've posted before with all my thoughts and beliefs and outright speculation that Regency folk of the middling and upper sorts were probably as cleanly and nice smelling as most folks nowadays. That is not an impeccable standard, as anyone who takes public transportation will testify. But it's also not the universal reek-to-heaven some folks think it must be. More recent e...
Joanna Bourne: When to use saidisms.
http://jobourne.blogspot.com/2010/02/when-to-use-saidisms.html
Saturday, February 20, 2010. When to use saidisms. A 'saidism' is one of those nifty replacements for 'said'. He whispered, he noted, he declared, he suggested, he promised and so on and on and on. You run into the rule sometimes -. And it just seems so wrong. What it is . . . There's this unfortunate tendency of novice writers to pluck creative dialog tags, apparently at random, from a list they have in the back of their three-ring binder from sixth grade. But it's, like, y'know, more of a guideline.

Romancing the Thrill Quill: September 2012
http://romancethethrillquill.blogspot.com/2012_09_01_archive.html
Saturday, September 22, 2012. Old Post Resurrection: I Hate My Muse! Driving home today, I got the strong, overpowering fragrance of fresh cut alfalfa hay. It hit me like a strong draw on a pot plant, and I had to pull over for five minutes and just lay back and sniff. I love, love, love that smell. It’s what I like to call a “hay-high”. What she had planted there was absolute beauty in words, too. Ah well. Have you ever had that happen? Thank heavens it doesn't happen often. I think she only likes car r...

Rise of the Slush: I've moved!

Rise of the Slush. The blog of a silly, dashingly blotchy writer. Fashioning an attempt to become more than the sum of her commas. Thursday, May 21, 2015. I've been sharing on Facebook and Twitter, but figured I owed my readers an update. The lack of posts on the blog is because I've moved. Yep, I'm over at www.landra.graf. It's my brand new site and designed more to me and the books I'm writing. Feel free to swing by and check things out. I hope you're able to follow me on the journey. If you're interes...

Rose's Writing Journey: June 2008
http://roseswritingjourney.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html
Friday, June 27, 2008. I stole this meme from Deniz. Ah, the fun of doing a useless quiz when I should be getting over a rough spot in the novel. {eg}. What is the wallpaper on your computer? A boring Vista picture of grass with dew on it. How many televisions do you have in your house? Are you right handed or left handed? Left-handed, even when it's inconvenient. Have you ever had anything removed from your body? Not that I know of :P. What is the last heavy item you lifted? Already done it for free!

Rose's Writing Journey: August 2008
http://roseswritingjourney.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html
Monday, August 11, 2008. Long time no see! It's been ages since I updated this blog last! But in this case at least, my silence here equals a great deal of productivity. In the last few weeks, I've upped the word count on the 2nd draft of Hidden Underground from 20,000 to 50,000, which means I'm now half finished. Hurrah! That's a good deal toward my goal of completing this stage before Christmas. Since it's my birthday today (blazing hot day at 120 degrees Fahrenheit! Excerpt #1 from Hidden Underground.

Rose's Writing Journey: February 2008
http://roseswritingjourney.blogspot.com/2008_02_01_archive.html
Sunday, February 24, 2008. Literally laughing out loud. Does it ever bug you how often you see the word literally used all wrong? From stories, to blogs, to new articles, and of course constantly in everyday speech, people love to use the word, ending up with some pretty ridiculous sounding assertions. My brother and I discussed our shared pet peeve about this the other day, which led to a googling challenge to see how many results we got for phrases like "his eyes literally popped out of his head" (eww!

Nietzsche I'm Not: Failure To Succeed Leads To Success
http://carolkrenz.blogspot.com/2012/01/failure-to-succeed-leads-to-success.html
Saturday, January 28, 2012. Failure To Succeed Leads To Success. Lately, I've noticed a lot of blogs and media web sites examining writers and their paths to success or failure. In the past few weeks I've read musings from Anne Lamott. Whose Bird By Bird. Has to be one of the best books about writing I've ever read), Kathryn Stockett. Author of The Help. A Pulitzer-prize winner who discusses the success of failure on CNN's website. Talks about how she sold a brilliant story to the New Yorker. Roughly par...
Nietzsche I'm Not: Agent, Agent, Who's Got an Agent!?
http://carolkrenz.blogspot.com/2011/06/agent-agent-whos-got-agent.html
Saturday, June 25, 2011. Agent, Agent, Who's Got an Agent! I have a problem with that. In fact, I think this is misguided, wishful thinking. But to each his or her own; after all, who am I to judge? Frankly, there are. Some bad books out there, which is another cause for dismay, and belongs to another blog post. Isn't it quite obvious, if after six agents do this, there just might be something not quite right with the work and not the agent? For obvious reasons, this is the advice most ignored. In a ...

My final editing is full of me sitting in coffee shops muttering,. I've just said he can see over the crowd. I don't need. To say - 'Because he was tall he could see over the crowd.'.
