for the love of learning: Who should control teachers' professional learning?
http://www.joebower.org/2013/03/who-should-control-teachers.html
For the love of learning. Assessment is not a spreadsheet - it's a conversation. Wednesday, March 20, 2013. Who should control teachers' professional learning? The Calgary Board of Education (CBE) announced today that they do not support. The proposed agreement between the Government of Alberta and Alberta Teachers Association. We are concerned that the proposed agreement gives individual teachers exclusive control over their professional learning. The heart of local autonomy. Is with the child, and the ...
for the love of learning: Primitive Moral Development: PBIS
http://www.joebower.org/2010/10/primitive-moral-development-pbis.html
For the love of learning. Assessment is not a spreadsheet - it's a conversation. Thursday, October 21, 2010. Primitive Moral Development: PBIS. Unfortunately, my school subscribes to a program called Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. Keep in mind that only the "good" kids who were lucky enough to be caught being good by receiving a green card are eligible for prizes - including the opportunity to eat lunch with the administration. Here's a real story that happened just the other day:. My gr...
for the love of learning: Giving a student a zero teaches them a lesson
http://www.joebower.org/2012/06/giving-student-zero-teaches-them-lesson.html
For the love of learning. Assessment is not a spreadsheet - it's a conversation. Sunday, June 3, 2012. Giving a student a zero teaches them a lesson. Here is some of the common sense around giving kids zeroes that doesn't make a lot of sense and is far too common. Giving a kid a zero teaches them a lesson. Yes, zeroes do teach lessons, but they are not the lessons you might be thinking. Punishment teaches an important lesson. You can get your way with people who are weaker than you are by hurting them.
for the love of learning: Who is school for?
http://www.joebower.org/2010/02/who-is-school-for.html
For the love of learning. Assessment is not a spreadsheet - it's a conversation. Sunday, February 7, 2010. Who is school for? Over the years the purpose of school has changed. At one time it could be said that the purpose of school was to simply produce employees. Some like John Dewey have said that:. Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself. Dewey's words imply that school is more about the whole child and less about the economy or the workforce. You know, school isn't for everyone.
for the love of learning: Pink, Godin, Kohn and asymptotes
http://www.joebower.org/2010/01/pink-godin-kohn-and-asymptotes.html
For the love of learning. Assessment is not a spreadsheet - it's a conversation. Friday, January 29, 2010. Pink, Godin, Kohn and asymptotes. Both refer to asymptotes. I found myself agreeing with Seth Godin when he wrote, "asymptotes are sort of boring." But my tune quickly changed. After reading both Dan Pink's book. I found myself oddly fascinated with how they used analytic geometery to show how learning mastery can be achieved. Pink explains in his book. Ten percent of applications to Harvard are fro...

The Pocket Rocket: January 2012
http://thepocketeer.blogspot.com/2012_01_01_archive.html
Monday, January 9, 2012. What if Teachers Were Paid Like Professional Athletes? I had a few thoughts rolling around in my head over the holidays, and one had me thinking about the teaching profession, and how it pays its professionals. The question was, does our education system, with a basic structure of Superintendents, Administrators, and Teachers running. This isn't a debate about paying teachers more, but I was comparing the pay grades of these positions in terms of real value? The Teacher in Me.

SHOOTING TOMMY TWO TEEF. I left any decent lighting for shooting photos in the States. So when I decided to take some shots of this brilliant skullfaced bastard, I was forced to make due with what tools I had on hand. Despite my swiss family robinson lighting kit, I ended up getting some pretty decent shots that only really needed some basic color adjustments in post. I just uploaded the .STLs with which to print Tommy Two Teef. Onto my shop page. So go print your own. And shoot your own. If you have to.
