The Transient Thai: Thai’ve Been Ruined!

http://www.joelgarceau.blogspot.com/2015/01/thaive-been-ruined.html

The Life and Times of Mr Garceau After China. Monday, January 5, 2015. Thai’ve Been Ruined! There comes a day in every Peace Corps service when the volunteer begrudgingly realizes that they're a different person than they came in as. Dirtier, weirder, cheaper, increasingly culturally irrelevant and a terrible failure at the English language. Peace Corps ruins the standards you once held yourself to. Absolutely destroys them. Here’s how Peace Corps ruined me:. No way in hell. I am the slapstick king!

The Transient Thai: What Have I Achieved? (A Love Letter to Phung)

http://www.joelgarceau.blogspot.com/2015/01/what-have-i-achieved-love-letter-to.html

The Life and Times of Mr Garceau After China. Friday, January 23, 2015. What Have I Achieved? A Love Letter to Phung). Not going to lie, going into the last two months of my service has been a bit rough. I’ve been struggling with the creeping question of what I’ve actually accomplished? 8221; exclaimed the student teachers, obviously aware they were basking in Phung’s greatness. And with that she shot off. 8220;Here are some games you could use! 8221; “Oh! You shouldn’t translate so much! All Thai teache...

The Life and Times of Mr Garceau After China. Monday, November 3, 2014. In the Mind of a Coked Up Bob Ross. Ryan and I flew to Nepal to celebrate my birthday and spend 12 days outside of Thailand during this past bpit term (school break). It was AMAZING! The entire trek felt like it took place inside the coked out head of Bob Ross. Happy little trees everywhere! Massively exaggerated happy little mountains! Oh also it was cold. Like balls cold. Like my balls were cold and possibly had frostbite&#...I'm s...

The Transient Thai: December 2014

http://www.joelgarceau.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

The Life and Times of Mr Garceau After China. Saturday, December 13, 2014. It was 4 in the morning. I was chugging along in the dark on a raised freeway, making my way back towards the Bangkok city lights. The moon was high in the sky, throwing it’s yellowish light over the scene. My biggest worry, the mantra that had been running through my head for the last 40 minutes was simple. 8221; “It’s so close! Please make it in time! That day, I was a lucky one who survived. Barely. First, it hurts! Face of pai...

Leo's China Page: 20 Questions

http://leoschinapage.blogspot.com/2011/04/20-questions.html

Peace Corps in China. Nciku (Chinese Language Site). Thursday, April 21, 2011. Recently I have wondered if all of the questions posed to me by family and friends would be much better answered by making a list. Below are the most common questions that I have heard, I hope it will aid you in understanding my service here. What is the most challenging aspect of life in China? 2 How much of your time is spent preparing for and teaching classes? 3 What is your relationship with other teachers and faculty?

Leo's China Page: December 2010

http://leoschinapage.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html

Peace Corps in China. Nciku (Chinese Language Site). Sunday, December 19, 2010. Our final weeks in the semester have arrived with astonishing speed. Soon many of us will be doing traveling in-country or visiting other countries nearby. My friends and I have toyed with the idea of going to Vietnam for the holiday season and perhaps catching some sites in China along the way. I hope that this Christmas season is filled with happiness for all of you back home. I wish I could be there with you but alas I...

Leo's China Page: March 2011

http://leoschinapage.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html

Peace Corps in China. Nciku (Chinese Language Site). Thursday, March 31, 2011. This week Yibin's weather has grown surprisingly comfortable. The sun, yes the sun, has even grown visible in the sky. As the climate has improved campus activities have sprung up again and students are outside studying in the shade. At the talk most volunteers were interested in how Peace Corps China had changed since Hessler's service in the 90's. At one point the conversations even led to Yibin, at which time the author...
