The Lurid Pulp and Pop Culture Writings of. Sunday, August 2, 2015. Spent the pre-dawn hours this morning watching the great Andrew Prine going psycho in John Peyser's The Centerfold Girls. To it, and the film as a whole wallows in that peculiar and distinct seediness that many of the rougher American exploitation flicks from this period possessed. The transfer on Glass Doll Films' blu-ray release of The Centerfold Girls. Isn't as sharp or vibrant as their other great new release, 1973's Bonnie's Kids.

Modern comics-mavens like to view Superman and Batman as diametrical opposites, with the former representing bright optimism and the latter dark pessimism. One could argue that they were preceded in this by two radio-heroes launched by radio producer George Trendle, with the Ranger debuting in 1933 and the Hornet in 1936, just two years before the publication of Superman.

The characters are simply stereotypes, though at least they have some modest variety, in contrast to this film from the same year.

GORGO was director Eugene Lourie's final word on the giant-monster subgenre that he helped initiate in the U.S. with BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS. And to which he had returned with 1959's GIANT BEHEMOTH. I don't imagine that director Lourie or any of his collaborators had access to the Japanese GOJIRA, but if not, the parallels are striking.
