What I planned to do. Now why, you might ask, in a computer science capstone presentation, have I just talked for 2 minutes about parrots? The idea that I had was to develop a hardware and software package that would provide the mechanism for my parrots to be able to interact with a computer outside of the cage. In short, I wanted to develop a parrot keyboard. Computer monitor outside parrot’s cage. What work has been done in the past? From http:/ www.dartmouth.edu/ aeubanks/zoodolph2.JPG. Irene Pepperbe...

It’s difficult to think like a parrot, even with practice. Sometime you have to guess and sometime you guess wrong. But on many things I guessed right, and the parrot is. Using the keyboard and increasing the number of keys pressed and the number of different keys pressed. I am also observing increased vocalizations of the sounds presented as a part of the program material. Building prototypes is extraordinarily valuable. You do not know what you’re going to learn until you actually do it. In addition to...

This whole thing came about as a result of my getting a Master's degree in computer science. I needed a subject for my capstone project, and had a sudden inspiration: Make a keyboard that would allow the parrots to interact with a computer. He wants to know. Mmmm. Good treat! I looked on this project as a means to an end: obtaining a computer science degree by creating a research tool. And, no doubt, the keyboard and software will be extremely useful to that part of the academic community interested ...

The Parrot Keyboard: Mith & his keyboard
http://www.parrotkeyboard.com/mith_keyboard.html
Mith and his keyboard. Mith has now had his keyboard for about three months, and I have had friends with parrots ask a number of questions about Mith and his keyboard. Does he use it? Yes, frequently throughout the day. The keyboard program keeps track of which keys he hits, how often, and when, so we can get a good idea of his use of it throughout the day. He never seems to tire of it, perhaps because we can change it frequently. What happens when Mith presses a key? Can we make a keyboard for your bird?

Note: The next couple of pages contain a lot of technical material—examples of computer code, diagrams, etc. Click here. If you'd rather skip all that. In June of last year, I sketched a simple design for a 5-key keyboard that could stand up to the demands of the parrot world and would be simple to build. The keys consisted of rods that would extend through the bars of the parrot cage and would be activated by the bird pressing or pulling on them. Three Classes of Keyboard Challenges. Class 3: from the bird’s point of view. I’ve tried to make design choices based on (what I understand of) the parrot’s point of view. Rather than taking my evolution and prejudice as a starting point, I’ve tried to think about how the parrot would look at the keyboard. I deliberately did not enclose the finished keyboard because I wanted it to be open (without anything for a predator to lurk behind). All surfaces exposed to the parrots are Lexan or stainless steel, bird-safe materials. In summary, I trie...
