This a a short biographical sketch done by the author as it appears in his book Fifty-Six Generations. The Captain January 1919, just after receiving the British Military Cross from King George V. Maps of Ypres today, U.S. 1918 battle maps, and monument maps. Dad supplied detailed battle maps in his book. Modern maps and maps on the American Monument Barbara and I collected on our (map) quest in 2005. Of interest are (1) Watou. Far left), the town to which Dad and his company withdrew while not actively at the front. It still is a small, quaint town. (2) Poperinge. Where "R and R" was taken (there is still the now famous Talbot House. See the link to the Ypres pics) and Kemmel Hill (26).

Daring Raid and Blowing Up of a Pillbox. They replied that they weren't no gentlemen and that they had not seen any round here. Puzzled and embarrassed, I did not continue the conversation. As an American, I thought gentleman was respectful address. Only later did I find out that it was an upper class distinction that the working class weren't comfortable with. Anyway, I didn't find any battlefields, and I didn't find Ypres, even though it was only a mile away! Access door to the inside.

A Picture Time Line of YPRES 1913, 1915, 1919 and Modern Times. Barbara and I collected photos during our stay in Ypres, showing before the war, the devastation, and the rebuilding mostly done by 1926. The residents say that Germany wasn't forthcoming with reparation funds. I was surprised that the city had been rebuilt, and so beautifully. I had expected that we would find ruins. What a proud lot the townspeople are. This big building is the famous Cloth Hall or market.
