Random Walks: The People of the Rail, the Wire, and the Gun VS. the People of the Gun, the Whip, and the Chain
http://johnkurman.blogspot.com/2015/07/the-people-of-rail-wire-and-gun-vs.html
Random musings, observations, and extended blathers by John Kurman. Tuesday, July 7, 2015. The People of the Rail, the Wire, and the Gun VS. the People of the Gun, the Whip, and the Chain. Or maybe, more simply, the People of the Machine VS. The People of the Horse. Nah, I like the first title, and the order of the descriptives is important. Maybe the former will some day win. Do I need to explain? Give me a sec. .okay, maybe not. This would explain Steampunk. That. And for certain by the 1920s? Are we n...

Random musings, observations, and extended blathers by John Kurman. Tuesday, June 30, 2015. I once made a prediction that Bruce Rauner would be elected governor of Illinois, and that it would it suck. Big surprise, considering, unlike Scott Walker, Rauner does not have a compliant, obsequious, groveling legislature to grease the rails for him. As for corruption, a sturdy moral compass would be a good start. Rauner claims to be on the side of right action, but seeing as actions speak louder than words...

Random musings, observations, and extended blathers by John Kurman. Wednesday, December 31, 2014. Soldati Attempting To Extort The Capo De Tutti Capi? The Atlantic's Connor Friedersdorf seems to be of the opinion. That a "work stoppage" by New York's Finest is - not quite extortion - but being used as leverage for union negotiations. It will be interesting to see if this has any effect on crime. My guess is no. And if so, it will be an embarrassment. Or worse, turns into a mass harvest method of extortion.
Random Walks: September 2014
http://johnkurman.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Random musings, observations, and extended blathers by John Kurman. Wednesday, September 24, 2014. Temporary) Good News For Food-Powered Robots. Grain and cereal staples are having another bumper crop. Corn and soya bean (soya bean, that's so cute) yields are out the roof. Good news for you starch and meat eaters (and yes, I have been experiencing sticker shock in my meat buying), not to mention you high fructose corn syrup sugary drink and candy consumer types. Bad news for food rioters. The art was, eh...
Random Walks: Tomorrow, Pluto
http://johnkurman.blogspot.com/2015/07/tomorrow-pluto.html
Random musings, observations, and extended blathers by John Kurman. Monday, July 13, 2015. New Horizons zooms past Pluto tomorrow. It's a big fucking deal. Why is it a big fucking deal? We've never seen it before, that's why. Pluto, King of the Kuiper belt, as far as we know, has been a dot or, at best, a smudge. And tomorrow, we get to see it as a world. Meet Pluto. Pluto? Earth Courtesy of the United States of America. It's already a world, courtesy of NASA. July 14, 2015 at 6:54 AM. 7/14/2015 8:53 am ...

Time, Metal, More. Monday, July 20, 2015. You can lead a man to a drink But you can't make him take a sip You can lead a man to a link But that don't mean he gonn' click What's this? Tuesday, July 14, 2015. Imagine your life without time, without a constant sense that you’re running behind, frustrated that yet again you are losing the battle against the irresistible force of the ticking clock. Imagine not wishing there were more hours in the day. We haven’t always been obsessed with time. In fa...Instead...

Squeezing the Hourglass: March 2015
http://squeezingthehourglass.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Time, Metal, More. Tuesday, March 31, 2015. Researchers in Britain and the U.S. have found that a medieval concoction meant to treat eye infections also has the ability to kill the MRSA superbug. The Daily Telegraph reported that the recipe, which dates from the 10th century, calls for two species of Allium - a scientific type that includes garlic, onion, and leek - as well as wine and oxgall, or bile from the stomach of a cow. Squeezing the Hourglass: November 2014
http://squeezingthehourglass.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html
Time, Metal, More. Friday, November 28, 2014. All over the place. Most of the stuff people stress about isn't actionable. Ferguson, Fukushima, financial meltdown.and that's just a subset of the letter "F.". Oh sure, you can come up with a plan, organize people, make a group. And those are fine behaviors. Good even. Maintaining your own mental health, confidence, and sense of agency are prerequisites to any sustained external action. This is the dream. I can't believe these people work so hard for this.

Squeezing the Hourglass: June 2014
http://squeezingthehourglass.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
Time, Metal, More. Tuesday, June 24, 2014. Life, The Universe and Everything, or, 42. Another reader, following on, chastised James for stating that nobody is worth $300 million a year. What about the great heroes of capitalism—the innovators? He wanted to know. Surely someone who cures cancer is worth $300 million. James's reply here is worth quoting in full. And responding as follows to another who suggested that executives are just working people like anyone else:. No, they aren't. People being pa...

Squeezing the Hourglass: Kafala
http://squeezingthehourglass.blogspot.com/2015/04/kafala.html
Time, Metal, More. Wednesday, April 29, 2015. Just think, once we change the definition of smoking we can move on to changing the definition of citizen. We won't even need any new laws, it's so easy! Qatar has the highest ratio of migrants to citizens in the world, with only 225,000 citizens in a population of 1.7 million. Yet the country has some of the most restrictive sponsorship laws in the Persian Gulf region, leaving migrant workers vulnerable. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Time, Metal, More. Wednesday, December 17, 2014. Ethnic Enchantment, or, All these things aren't real. Now of course there’s a point to talking about, and learning from, the abuses inflicted by groups of people on other groups of people over the last five centuries or so of North American history. Such discussions, though, have very little to offer the topic of the current series of posts here. It’s a commonplace of history that dark ages are the cauldron from which nations are born. Do I know you? I kno...

johnkurke | A great WordPress.com site
A great WordPress.com site. July 1, 2012. First things first, I hate moving. All the packing, the moving of said packed things and the unpacking. Not to mention the awkward beginning stages of getting to know your new roommates- now don’t get me wrong, I love to meet new people with the opprotunity to make a new friend, it just takes me while to get comfortable. I’m sure most people know exactly what I’m talking about. Blog at WordPress.com.

Random Walks
Random musings, observations, and extended blathers by John Kurman. Sunday, December 24, 2017. Let's say I decide to create something of value, a token. I set it up a fetish rule so that whatever this token is, there will a limited number of them. The idea being that scarcity will translate to value and I finally come up with a symbolic token. I eat a ham sandwich. I then go through a series of rather strange gestures and motions. Other people are also dancing and pooping. At the end of that time, wh...
